Car patrolling for looters and those engaging in criminal behavior

In Brooklyn (NYC) and maybe even in other boroughs of the city groups of people are getting together to car patrol the streets during evening and even night hours. They are supposed to look out for those that throw bricks, break into businesses and steal stuff, riot, and engage in other criminal behavior, and then report it. They are not supposed to confront these hooligans but instead notify the cops when they see something going on and let them take care of it.
This is happening in the neighborhood where hubby grew up and he decided that he wants to participate in that. He's been patrolling for two days in a row already. I thought he would do it for a few hours and head home but he does it well into the night. It's something he feels good about doing.
While I sort of understand where he is coming from, I don't approve of it. His safety is more important to me. And anything can happen, even when you are in your own car. It's best to stay home and let others do the patrolling. It shouldn't be a civilian job in the first place. Cops are supposed to be doing that. I guess they are not.
Since this will not end any time soon I hope hubby is not going to do this every night. Would be better if he stopped altogether. Safety first and better safe than sorry. Just because he is being safe and thinks nothing will happen to him you never know.
Is there something like this going on where you live?

He'd be better off with another guy in the car. No one I know of is doing this.

Thankfully, he didn't go yesterday. I hope this means he will not do this anymore.

I read that the police won't interfere anyway because they're outnumbered. I don't think it is something civilians should be doing but I'm not in your situation.

I don't think civilians should be doing this either. If a business owner wants to guard his store or drive around and see if anything is going on there in his neighborhood or by his business he can do it. But others should not get involved.
