Playing Until the Street Lights Came On

Do you remember playing until the street lights came on? If you didn't hurry up, your mom would stick her head out of the window and yell your name to tell you to get on home!
Remember riding bikes, roller skating, jumping rope, playing Red Rover, playing a ball game of some sort, running through the sprinkler, drinking from the outside water spigot, swimming and so much more? We didn't have any modern technology; and having a large box meant that you could make something creative such as a fort. I loved those big appliance boxes!
In the winter, we'd stay out until we couldn't feel our hands or feet and throw snowballs at each other, build a snowman or a snow fort.
Oh, yeah, and don't forget waiting for the ice cream truck and getting big chunks of ice from the milkman. (This was before refrigerated trucks.)
What do you remember?

Save for the snow, you pretty much just described my childhood perfectly! All of us kids knew that as soon as that first streetlight came on, we'd better haul butt to get home, or else we'd be in big trouble! Such great times and great memories. Kids these days sure don't know what they're missing!

You’ve described my childhood. Don’t forget hopscotch and we collected bottles in our wagon and took them to our little store for the deposits and with the change bought candy.

@LindaOHio I usually bought apple bubble gum and pixie sticks with the change that I made from the bottles

@LindaOHio My grandkids lives are a bit different due to living in a huge city, but they lead a wonderful life filled with culture, foods, sports, music, theater, museums, and other wonderful things including many of the things you mentioned.

Things have changed so much. We were never afraid to be outside, even by ourselves. Nowadays you have to be vigilant.

I remember all those things but never got an ice chunk.
At my grandma's a horse pulled milk truck delivered the milk. When we visited I ran out to give the horse a carrot.
But up here in the Great White North we only played until the lights came on in winter. They come on right after school.
In summer I had to be in bed before dark. Still am.
