We're Still Alive!

I have no arguments that things are much safe for kids these days. They must use seat belts or car seats when riding in an automobile, outlets are covered, doors to cabinets with hazardous cleaning supplies are locked, and so on. But remember how we used to play and how many "hazards" we were exposed to in the house and outside? And we're still alive! What hazards did you overcome in your childhood? A lot of the playgrounds had woodchips for bedding, which still hurt when you fell but weren't so bad. However, I can think of one or two that had a lot of concrete. We rode in the bed of the truck with no seat belt, but we did have seat belts in the car growing up. Mostly lap belts though, no cross belt for the chest. Hmm..

@LindaOHio Many years ago now, back when I was still in elementary school, I had a teacher that used to talk about her youth. She did not grow up in a very good area, but she talked about where she would go play etc. I look back now and see she was doing her part to help us understand that people come from different backgrounds. Anyway, she talked about how she was climbing a wire fence, and I think I'll leave it there. You can imagine that particular story stays with me now decades later.

We never had outlet covers, never had cabinets locked, played in the woods & trails, barely wore helmets or riding gear of any sort, etc. We understood the words NO, HOT, STAY OUT, etc...

Yes, "no" and many other words seem to fall on a lot of deaf ears these days!

@LindaOHio My kids may not always listen to my NO but if someone else says it they know they better listen!

Children need to be kept as safe as possible but they also learn from taking risks. It's a wonder some of us are still alive, isn't it?

oh gosh all of them. I remember smashing my chin on the jungle gym. I drank water straight from the hose.

Oh, yeah, drinking from the spigot; and if you weren't careful it squirted out your nose! :-)

we used to ride bikes in the unfinished section of the subdivision. Over the course of four years, we had one shoulder separation (me) four broken arms (friends), and one shattered leg (friends sister). we were stupid creating higher and higher jumps. The subdivision actually had a bulldozer clear that entire area.

Ouch! A helmet wouldn't have helped in those situations!

Would you believe that my Dad let me sit on his laps when driving sometimes?

I remember climbing on those type of bars. I was riding horses by that age also.

The playground at the elementary school where I went to school as a child was built on concrete. Yep, if you fell off the swing or slide or monkey bars you landed on hard concrete! There were a few broken arms over the years, but nobody got killed! haha

My parents were overprotective, so we had no hazards that I can remember except for riding bikes without helmets. If they were invented, we would have had them.
