Friday is upon us again, and the last day of spring in the northern hemisphere. Our weather is going to cooperate and usher summer in with some hot stuff. Meanwhile, it’s time for music! Here’s a song that is very well-known, often covered...and doesn’t mention the title in the song!
#9: The Weight - The Band
Heck, we don’t even know if they’re taking a load off Fanny or Annie!
(For the record, it is Fanny.)
Ooh, what a classic. One of the best-known songs in the career of The Band.
How well-known? Did you know the band Nazareth, famous for their cover of “Love Hurts,” took their name from the opening line of the song (“I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin’ about half past dead”)?
Most of the people mentioned in the song (Chester, Carmen, Luke, Fanny) were the names of people that members of the band knew. Not the devil, though (“when I saw Carmen and the devil walking side by side”): it’s the Grateful Dead who’s a friend of the devil.
Enjoy this legendary tune.
The Weight
Written by Robbie Robertson
Recorded by The Band
From Music From Big Pink, 1968
