What's Blooming: Elderberries

I never thought much about elderberries until my daughter's father in law sent me some elderberry wine and elderberry jelly. Both were delicious and I look forward to getting restocked whenever I go over there or she comes here. Elderberry bushes grow near water or low lying areas. You see them often along the road and they start blooming in June in most areas. As you can see in the photo, the blooms are white. The berries form under the blooms and are first green and then turn a light brown and last a dark brown/purple color. Then they are ripe. If eaten before fully ripened you are likely to get an upset stomach and stomach ache. That is the reason they were thought of as "toxic" in years past. This old wives tale has been debunked and people everywhere are enjoying their elderberries and the things they create with them. This is one of the bushes that I saved from my hubby whacking it down this year. It was actually growing right beside our house on the shady side. I have found some more big ones back below the chicken coops that are close to the property line. Next year we should have enough berries to make some jelly! I don't think I have ever eaten elderberries, or had anything made from them.

Oh, yes! Elderberry jelly is delicious! I grew up on a farm in southern Missouri. All kinds of berries, fruit and plants grew on our farm. If you could eat it or make something to eat out of it my mom and dad knew how and taught us kids how to make use of it, too. (My parents lived through the depression and learned everything they could about wild produce to help their families survive those years.) When we can catch wild plants in fruit my daughter and I gather some and make jellies and jams from them. YUM!

@DaddyEvil That will be awhile. I only have one mature bush. I planted more this year from cuttings I took off some along the road.

They are pretty easy to root! I got cuttings off another bush along the road behind our house. Three of the four rooted. I am pretty sure the 4th one is not going to make it but that is pretty good odds.

@wolfgirl569 I found some at the edge of the woods that are so tall I have no idea HOW I would get the berries. I guess we will try when they ripen but I'll be disappointed it I can't get to them!

They're a pretty flower. No, I've never had any. I hope you have enough next year to make jam.

I don't think I've ever tasted these. It's nice that you have access to some for your own use.

Yes, it is! I will also collect some seed this year and maybe plant some more next spring. Always nice to have good seed to trade with the garden group too!

@JudyEv I joined a couple of groups here on Facebook that do trades in the group and then mail the seed out. It's a pretty good deal to trade some you don't need for those you do need. And I have made some more awesome friends there! Win-win!

Yes it is because of the anti-inflammatory derived from the elderberry.

Good that you saved it. And sure you would have enough stock of it. I never heard of it. Maybe we don't have it here in we have some other name. I can't make out from the picture.
