Wednesday's class - Art and movie.... and The Stolen Generation.

Perth, Australia
June 27, 2020 5:33am CST
In my childcare course, we had been working on a unit regarding different cultures. And on Wednesday we were specifically learning about Aboriginals. We did some art using some natural resources. So students were incorporating rocks, sticks, leaves, feathers etc in or on their art work. Me? I was having a good time doing some art but I only did one thing and just continued on with some overdue work. The photo attached is the Aboriginal Flag that I painted in using leaves. After lunch we watched a movie that I've already seen called Rabbit Proof Fence and some other YouTube clips regarding The Stolen Generation. I usually suck at explaining things so I am just going to copy and paste a little bit from Wikipedia about The Stolen Generation. "The Stolen Generations were the children of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who were removed from their families by the Australian federal and state government agencies and church missions, under acts of their respective parliaments." I have always known this happened but what was completely new to me was for how long this went on and how many children were taken away. Between 1910-1970, 100,000 children were removed from their parents. And to again copy this part from some of my notes from class (which is apparently also on the internet but I can't say where cause I don't know): "Many children from the Stolen Generations suffered extreme physical, psychological and sexual abuse living under state care. Where children were forced to reject their culture, they often felt ashamed of their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage as they were forced to adopt a new identity." This is extremely sad but I wanted to share this information. It angers me. It saddens me. It frustrates me. We will never learn. There is so much going on now. There has always been something going on to make each other feel divided. Race, religion, politics, sexuality, financial status....never ends.

@Janet357 That's right, it's so sad and disturbing. I believe most were unable to ever see their parents again but there have been cases where some children escaped and went back to their families. But I'm not too sure to be honest of how many possibly went back to their parents.

It always amazes me that this went on for so long. It was a shocking thing to go to the aboriginal people.

@JudyEv It sure doesn't. And it doesn't help with all the people now going out finding almost anything and deeming it "offensive." It's getting a bit crazy. I'm trying to be understanding! But some of the complaints seem rather silly to me. I read something about people protesting about L'oreal. Apparently people are angry that the company uses the word "Whitening" on their labels for some of their products.

@JudyEv I agree with you completely. I'm so angry and sad for what happened. And angers me with how much this sort of thing has happened around the world.

Why can't we as humans leave other cultures alone? This is so sad and cruel and for it to have gone on as long as it did is scary.

@simone10 I know what you mean. I agree. Well....actually sometimes I am shocked and other times I feel I'm quite desensitised because so much has happened. I'm still caring about what's happened but I just mean I get a thought of "Of course this has happened." Hope that makes sense.

It is mind boggling that it continued until 1970. One would never imagine that would continue so far into the century.

@AmbiePam That's right. I was seriously so shocked and disgusted to learn how long it went for. Well I mean it shouldn't have happened period but I just couldn't believe it was going on for way longer than I thought.

Oh that is such a shameful thing. Use of Power and Money to subjugate any community or race, and such extreme hardships to children is something that can never be forgiven. Such colonial practices made millions suffer in the past. However, some very bad practices continue till date.

@just4him I agree. I don't wish to sound negative but I highly doubt this sort of behaviour will end. It started very early on when the world began and it has continued all the way up til now so I feel what has always happened, will always be.

I feel you. We have similar situation. We have the "ati' the native in our place. They're exploited and abused but it's good our government created an agency that takes care of them. They're the indigenous primitive people.

I learn about this originality of tribes and aboriginal when I attended one of the optional paper in Sociology of education.. It is really anger and displeasure to read such articles and books when children are separated from their children just to gain and control the power and take away all their rights.. I was following up one articles and in that article of the indigenous tribe of Australia expression how new generation has been losing their own mother tongue and tradition and culture

@psanasangma I completely agree with you. It's really disrespectful and cruel to do this to families! If the parents were abusing their children then yes I can understand but taking them away just because of their colour / race is sickening!

I think every country, and every culture, is guilty of some forms of bigotry and racism and other despicable acts. I'm hoping that in these modern times we realize the atrocities we have inflicted on people and take steps to amend our ways. There is no room for hatred or intolerance these days, as we are all one big family on this planet earth.

@moffittjc I agree with you. Originally I was going to talk about how this has and is happening in various places around the world but was afraid it would start something. I've been very observant to some people on here who seem to be quite ok with things such as this so tried not to say too much. And again I agree with you, I do wish everyone on Earth could just get along and stop being so full of hatred and / or racism.
