Pet Peeve

My job has been writing over the past few years. I have and do write for various websites. I work hard.
A pet peeve is when people tell me that it is good to have a "hobby" or good to be "busy".
I do not write as a "hobby". I do not write to be "busy". I do it for productivity. I do it for income. I do it as a job.
I am poor. Yet, I am told I am not eligible for food stamps or such. So, yes I work. I work online. I barely make anything. But guess who has to pay for Wi-Fi? I do not have a vehicle.
Do you have a pet peeve? Thank you for letting me vent.

Working online does not pay much from what I know. But in the US you can do surveys for gift cards and you can save cupons to eat for less money. We don“t have that in my country.

The only survey website that I find worth my time is YouGov.

my understanding was in the US, if you work from home/have a home office, you can claim expenses directly related to your job.

I think what people mean, and this is NOT meant to be a dig or a jab, just an observation perhaps.
If what you do to make a living does not pay the bills, it is inadequate. Therefore, can it BE considered an income? Can it be considered a career?
I play guitar and write music, and I have an album released which is all over the place on iTunes, Spotify and countless other places. It does make money, and people like what I do.
But, am I a musician? Am I an artist? Look, my music does not pay the bills. My primary job does. Until my music pays the bills and puts me into a better financial position, the music is not my career.
It is, in fact, a hobby.
It is okay if we disagree. But that's just the way I see things. Unless your passions pay the bills, they are not careers. Because if they were careers they'd make you a living. I love my music, don't get me wrong. Enough people like my music that I make something from it. But not enough people like my music enough to keep the lights on, food on the table, clothes on my back, keep a mode of transportation and so on and so forth to call my music anything other than something I like to do.
I certainly understand how you feel. But unless you are off once a month or so doing book signings and actually making it writing...
It's a hobby.

@Spontaneo I am with you 100%. So long as it pays the bills. If it doesn't, it is best to find something that does while still NEVER giving up on the passions and hobbies.
Who knows? Maybe one day Pink Flamingoes (my album) will take off like gang busters and I won't have to go to the office anymore.
Until then I not only want to keep the lights on, but I want to enjoy life and retire comfortably. So, to the office I go since my writing and my music do not currently provide enough to pay the bills.
