While out earlier checking the bird eggs and flowers, I noticed this tiny blue butterfly at my feet. It was fluttering so quickly, it was hard to photograph.
Finally it landed on the butterfly bush bloom. I have seen these tiny beauties before but never knew their name.
Correct me if I am wrong anyone, but from my research this looks like a Summer Azure butterfly.
Either way it was a beauty to see in the garden.

We have a very similar little blue butterfly which comes out around this time called the Holly Blue (because it lays its eggs on holly (and ivy) leaves. It has white fringes to its wings and paler blue veining and the undersides of the wings are speckled with little black 'eyes'. It's probably not related to your Summer Azure but it also flutters its wings quite fast and doesn't seem to sit still for long so I have never managed to get a good shot. Actually, the Summer Azure is called Celastrina neglecta and the Holly Blue is called Celastrina argiolus, so they are related after all! Not only that, but this family of blues can be found everywhere from Northern Europe right through to Asia and North America. These little blues may look fragile little things but they can survive hard winters and travel vast distances (generation by generation).

I really don't know my butterflies. It certainly is a pretty one!
I planted a few new baby shrubs in the little garden beds at my apartment. I've noticed a lot more butterflies in Santa Fe than I saw in Paradise where I'm from. I really want to draw them and other pollinators into my little yard. So I got three bushes that are all supposed to be good for butterflies. I would really love to get some wildlife cameras too, so I might be able to see them whether or not I'm staring out the window.
Thanks for sharing the pretty picture! Is that by any chance a purple haze butterfly bush? It looks like one of the young bushes I just planted.
