No social distancing

I visited the library yesterday. I hadn't been there for months and at first things looked fine. There are two doors. In the past both doors were used as entrance and exit, now one of them is the entrance and the other one is the exit. That is a good idea. They also have signs about social distance, free gloves and hand sanitizer. I was happy to see that. Unfortunately most of the other library users didn't follow the rules. If two people want books from the same shelf we are supposed to wait. When the person leaves we can choose books from that shelf. Yes, it takes longer that way, but it is meant to protect us all. It is not something they are doing to annoy us, but many people are impatient and ignore the rules. The library staff has done what they can to make it safe for everyone, but it doesn't really help when people just ignore the rules.

I suppose it's the same in Denmark as in Norway, hardly any new infections so people stop taking it seriously. I usually tend to stay more than a meter away from strangers anyway, so I haven't really changed much.

Yes, we have between 20 or 40 new cases per day at the moment, and many people have started to relax and take it less seriously. A group of young Danes went on vacation in Sweden. They partied, got drunk etc and they caught COVID-19 during their trip. When they got back they didn't stay at home for two weeks and they infected other high schools students from the same school. They had to close the entire school again.

@Torunn I wouldn't go shopping if I had to spend 10 days in quarantine afterwards. I don't think that it would be worth it. Many Danes have holiday houses in southern Sweden and they would like to go there this summer, but it isn't possible to do that without quarantine, and I think that many of them are going to stay at home this year. I think that many of our new cases are in Copenhagen. The rules in Copenhagen are stricter than the rules in other parts of the country. Hotels in Copenhagen have to remain closed, but hotels in other parts of the country are allowed to open again.

@Porcospino Haven't actually heard about anyone being that daft here. I've heard about people going to Sweden to go shopping and then going to quarantine, and thinking how it can be worth staying it home for 10 days to get cheap bacon, but no partying. We had 35 new cases on Monday, but that's for Friday afternoon to Sunday morning, so on average less than 20 a day. Not sure where though, not here. We had one new case in two weeks, so I suppose it's mainly Oslo.

There are all sorts of people in this world, and it seems there are quite a few that will not adhere to the rules. I know some libraries in the US are letting people order the books online and then pick them up at the library desk. I think that is a great idea. I've not heard anything about gloves being provided here in the US, but I think that it's wonderful they are providing them there for you.

We are also able to do that. We order books on the website, and we receive a text message when the books are ready. I am going to do that in the future. I usually enjoy visiting the library. I like to see which new books they have bought etc, but at the moment I don't feel like doing that. There are too many people in the library, and when people stand so close together I don't enjoy walking around inside. Yes, it is great that they give us gloves. I didn't know that. I had my own gloves in my bag, but I didn't have to use them because they provided gloves for us.

@Porcospino I think another step the libraries across the world could take is to book appointments. Give twenty people an hour to look for books, then another twenty people come in.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That would be a good idea. At the moment anyone can enter when they want. My local library isn't as big as some of the other libraries and it gets crowded when too many people enter. It has always been that way and in the past I didn't think much about it, but at the moment it is a problem.

It doesn't help when people ignore the rules. You sure said a mouthful! That's why I stay inside as much as possible. Because others outside have proven that they just don't care! It's even worse when a leader of a country doesn't care. Like the guy in Brazil. When this pandemic is over he should be tried for mass murder and crimes against humanity. Those graves in Brazil are all the evidence needed to convict him. Although he has tested positive with COVID-19, so who knows? One of those graves might have been dug for him.

I also stay inside as much as possible. I read about the things that happen in Brazil. It is scary. Our prime minister has been criticized. Some people think that she shouldn't have closed almost everything down like she did. Personally I don't think that she worried too much or took it too seriously. I think she did the right thing, the opposite would have been much worse!

That is true. The signs about social distancing are large and it is hard to miss them, but some people are impatient and they don't want to wait for their turn.

@Porcospino Vince was telling me last night about the comparisons in the Scandinavian countries. Sweden didn't want the economy to go belly-up so didn't bring in any firm restrictions but it's now as badly off as the other countries but has lost many more people.

Yes, it is a serious problem when people don't follow the rules. We have a pretty low number of new cases at the moment, but that might change if people don't respect the rules.

Here, people increasingly respect the rules, because the situation has worsened.

Do you still have many new cases? Here the number of new cases is relatively low at the moment (compared to April and May) but we don't know if it will increase again.

Although the libraries here have not opened yet, I see this "ignoring the rules" everywhere else . We have to wear the masks here or public places do not let people in, but still, outside the facilities is a different story. And not everyone practices social distancing "properly" - either they don't understand or forget - but some really do choose to ignore .

We don't have to wear masks in public places, but every place has rules about social distancing. Many people don't follow the rules. I think that some people simply forget about the rules, but others choose to ignore them because they find the rules annoying. Some people have started to become impatient. They want to return to the way where things were in the past.

@Porcospino To think where this pandemic would be if everyone had followed the rules all this time. I know our country is divided about the whole mask and social distancing thing - it's no wonder the virus is completely out of control here. I can understand the frustrations, but if we don't work together, we are never ever going to tackle this.

I hope masks were worn, too. We have the same problem here with people choosing not to follow the rules where rules are. It's a hot mess!

No, there were no masks. We don't have to wear masks in public places. We only have to follow the rule about social distancing, but personally I think that a rule about masks would be a good idea. My husband and I have masks, but most people here don't use them.

@Porcospino That's up to you. The virus is airborne, so I would certainly use one. No one knows who a carrier may be.

Yes, many people are so impatient. Many things take longer at moment because they don't let many people in at the same time, but being impatient isn't going to help. Some people might forget the rules, but others ignore them on purpose.

Yes, I agree. It is important to follow the rules. We have seen what happens when people don't follow the rules. The number of new cases in my country is quite low at the moment, but I am afraid that it won't remain that way if people don't take it seriously.

Next time I going to order books via their website. I still have to pick them up at the library, but it won't take long and I don't have to walk around in the rest of the library where there are too many people.

That is true. The people are often the problem. The library staff has done what they can and it looks like they have planned things well, but when people don't respect the rules the signs about social distancing doesn't help much.

I am also afraid of that. People were standing too close. If many people are irresponsible they might close the place again. It is sad that so many people are impatient and ignore the rules. The staff has planned things well, but the library users are a problem.
