Better pack the long johns

Shortly we’ll be bringing the caravan up to the house to get ready to attend our first horse endurance ride for the season. Thankfully we don’t ride but we take photographs of the competitors. This time, however, we’re driving to Noggerup first and will stay Friday night near the little hall. There will be a concert there that we’ll attend. To get to Noggerup, we’ll first go through Yabberup and Mumballup. First thing Saturday morning, we’ll head to Allanson where the ride is being held. We’ll need our masks if we want to take photos in the vet ring. Normally, the vet inspection of the horses would take place on Friday but with the COVID restrictions the vetting won’t start till Saturday morning. There was a frost here this morning and there will quite likely be one at the ride. I must remind Vince to take his long johns. If you don’t know what ‘long johns’ are, you can see a pair drying in the photo. It was taken in France.

I had a long john when I was in London. For sure you will have a good time with the horses since you have been doing this regularly. But may I know what endurance ride is?

Endurance rides vary in distance. On Saturday, riders can choose to ride their horses 80, 40 or 20 kms. They can't ride 80 kms unless they have qualified on shorter rides. There are vet checks before, during and after each 'leg' of the longer rides. Later in the season, rides might be even longer up to 160 kms.

@JudyEv my wife's family is into race horses. From what I know, the horse cannot travel that long distance for it will die of fatigue. So how do those long distance rides go, on a slow run only?

@Alexandoy It isn't really a race. In fact, there are minimum times in the shorter distances. Once they have proven they can take care of their horse, there is no time limit but they can't go too fast or they will 'vet out'. The pulse rate/respiration/etc/etc will be compromised and the pair will be disqualified. The 160 kms ride might take a minimum of 7 hours. There are compulsory breaks of up to an hour during the ride. It is very different to thoroughbred horse-racing.

I can't believe that this event is allowed under these circumstances, it seems everywhere else all events have been canceled. Believe it or not I actually know what long johns are

I wonder if covid19 is directly related to concentrated populations where people are in very close quarters and suffer poverty @JudyEv

@rebelann Infections are more easily spread where people are in close proximity to each other. And poor people would have more trouble perhaps trying to keep things clean and sterile.

WA (Western Australia) has relaxed almost all its restrictions as we have next to no new cases here now. We have closed our borders with the east. Victoria is having a very bad time with the virus.

I know you will, but I have to say this anyway, please be extra careful. I would be too scared to be around a lot of people right now.

Thank you for your concern. Most people wore masks the whole time. We had to wear them in the vet ring and everybody did that. We also had sanitiser and used it often. There are very few cases here but of course we still can't afford to become complacent.

@JudyEv I'm glad that everyone was being safe. It's not that way here. Most people do, but there are some that are being selfish. I guess you have people like that everywhere.

@simone10 We are really lucky here as we only have very few cases in the city so everyone feels reasonably safe.

What delightful names. Norggerup. I hope Vince gets some good photos and you enjoy the weekend. Funny! At first I thought you meant a specific kind of donut - usually filled with jam or custard - my favorite! But yeah! We call the long underwear long johns, too :-)

@JudyEv Oh long john is something we call a certain type of donut type pastry here - it's a long oblong shaped one and is usually iced chocolate with custard filling - or slightly less common it's iced in white with raspberry filling. They're my favorite. :-)

@snowy22315 That's what I'm thinking. The old country halls can be pretty cold. With luck they might have wall heaters.

@JudyEv Do the long johns help? I grew up in the States and it was so so cold where I grew up. I had a down jacket and very warm things but it was so very cold. I have worn long johns I think here in the winter. Our winters here in Jerusalem are nothing like what I grew up with, but, it is still cold.

Long johns are long underpants, made of a warm material. Men would only wear them when it is very cold.

I should think they would have. I guess in a way a great many things did. But then, of course, countries also came up with their own inventions. Vince has found they make a big difference and I find the tights make a difference too.
