Do you enjoy a hot bath?

Japan

I've been told that in the States, "only kids take baths, adults take showers." In Japan, everyone takes baths. But that's because the bathtubs are so nice. You wash and rinse before getting in the hot water, so the water stays clean. Besides having an ofuro (bath tub) in the house, there are two types of public baths: sento and onsen. The main difference is the sento is just regular water that hsa been heated, and the onsen is a naturally heated water from underground. Japan, being a volcaniclally active country, has many natural hot springs. People like to go to them for holidays, since they are often in the mountains and have beautiful scenery around them. However, there is also an onsen two blocks from where I live in Tokyo. What? Did you know that if you drill down about one kilometer and have water down there (a "lens" of water) that it will naturally be about 50ÂșC, so by the time it comes up the pipe it will be just right for bath water? That's what they did. They drilled down a little over one kilometer and found hot water. Each onsen has certain chemical composition of the water that is unique to the area. Ours is rich in iron and is supposed to be good for your skin. (I have never gone to that one yet; as one of my friends said, "What if we run into our students there?") I have been to the other older onsen that I can get to by five minutes of driving. It has the same kind of water, being in the same area, and was created the same way. Sento are usually cheaper because they didn't have to go to the expense of drilling and maintaining; they just use city water. In the olden days, Japanese people did not have a bath in their homes. They went to the public bath where they could enjoy being with their neighbors. Do you like a hot bath or hot tub, a shower, or would you like to come visit Japan and try an onsen or sento?

I have never been to Japan, but I would love to visit Japan in the future. I like hot baths especially on a cold winter day. We have a bathtub in our house, and I use it sometimes.

Yes, I would like to go to Japan and try those baths. I have been to pools from hot springs in the mountains of Alberta and British Columbia. I take a hot bath every day. After gardening, I may shower first! People do love hot tubs here. Home ones are usually outside, and most swimming pools have them.

Thank you for that enlightening explanation. I did have the chance to take baths in public - Tokyo circa 1990. Ha ha. I figured no one knew me, so why not. Yes, I lingered in the hot tub, with older women and children with flushed red faces.

I think so yes. Taking showers can be fast but it can get to be drag and so I think I would like a relaxing soak specially if it does something good for my skin.

I watch a couple on youtube that live in Japan. They do videos that talk about their different cultures since the wife is from America. When I was younger, sometimes I would soap up and when I was rinsing off I'd plug up the tub and let it fill with water so I could sit and enjoy it for a little while.

We have well water - ice cold- but have it heated. I take hot showers during the day and a hot bath in the evening. I've been to the mineral springs in Montecatini, Venezuela, Budapest, and Turkey. I prefer my own well water, but would love to visit Japan when the virus is long gone.

We have an ensuite which has a shower, spa bath, hand basin and toilet. The second bathroom has a shower, bath, hand-basin and toilet. I like to soak in a bath from time to time but mostly I shower. I don't like trying to wash my hair in the bath and my back plays up if I try to wash my hair in the hand-basin. A shower solves the problems.

I love Japanese culture. I would love to go to Japan to visit Kiyomizu-dera, Akihabara, Comiket and of course go to an onsen.
