As fit as a Mallee bull

Angie {@andriaperry} wrote about spending a lot of time going up and down a flight of steps. She said that she didn’t need to go to a gym because of the exercise she was getting during the day. You can catch up here: https://www.mylot.com/post/3384897/my-workout I told her she would be as fit as a Mallee bull. This is a very Australian idiom phrase. It means to be in good physical shape. ‘Mallee’ is an aboriginal name for a particular eucalypt that grows from 2 to 9 metres in height. Many stems grow from a swollen woody base and the leaf canopy forms an umbrella shape. There are several mallee regions in Australia. If cattle escape into these regions, there is little in the way of grazing or water so they need to be tough to survive. The photo is of a bull we saw in France in 2017.

@JudyEv I did a search on it actually, just now. It means that something was correct or proper and actually is a very old saying going back to 1600.

I've heard fit as a fiddle too. I wonder where that one comes from.

Interesting how some idiom travels and some doesn't. I guess TV has a lot to do with it

We all know more than we did thanks to TV. Whether it's all correct or not is another matter I guess. lol

@Ronrybs We've been watching The IT Crowd. I guess they're reruns but thankfully no-one gets shot in that. Have you seen it?

@JudyEv Good job we don't all believe what we see on TV. I do love it when after a huge car wreck, the people climb out of the cars and all agree they are alright! Never mind when someone gets shot!

Mallee bulls wouldn't be this fat - and probably wouldn't last as long in the mallee country. But he is certainly a beauty.

@JudyEv We usually say someone has a face like a burglar's dog. My uncle used to use loads of these sayings when I was a kid. I'll have to try to remember them.

I saw Isabelle's response below mentioning fit as a fiddle, which is a common phrase here, but there are also others, including healthy as a horse and strong as an ox. Obviously, those last two don't need much explanation. I always find it interesting to learn about idioms.
