Okra: slimy or crispy?

We're getting a lot of okra from our garden now and we love it. I have always chopped it up into about 1/2 inch pieces, toss it with yellow corn meal, salt and pepper and fry it in a little oil. Divine.
I've never liked it in soup or stews, too slimy for me. But when I fry it, it comes up crispy and it's like a bowl of candy.
Well, I saw recently some okra where the whole pod was fried in one piece. And I thought I'd try it just to see if we liked it.
Epic culinary fail.
It was awful. There wasn't nearly enough crispy batter and too much slimy insides. I sure hated to throw away that fresh from the garden okra, but at least I didn't cook a big batch.
I know many of you don't like okra, but you might if you chopped it up in small pieces, tossed it in yellow corn meal...not white meal and especially not self rising meal!...salt and pepper, then fried it in a some oil. Not too much oil or the corn meal will get mushy instead of crispy.
Have you learned anything new with your cooking lately? I'm proof you're never too old to learn.

My Mom being from the south (NC) used to make Okra for us growing up on occasion. I always liked it crispy.

@dgobucks226 That's really cool that you have roots in the north and the south. My dad was in the Coast Guard and we moved from Virginia to Jersey City for two years. I'm glad my husband and I settled in NC and we've been here many years.

@1creekgirl My Mom grew up in Newton, NC not to far from Hickory. She married my Dad who was from New Jersey after WW II and they eventually settled there. My oldest brother was born in NC where they originally settled briefly before moving North. Myself, and 2 other sibs were born in NJ. I always thought of myself as an unofficial Southerner anyway. We would go down there each summer and I just loved the lifestyle and people there. I enjoy your posts about southern foods and other topics that talk about southern living. Thanks for asking!

I love okra. It is good with stewed tomatoes, bread crumbs and cheese. I enjoy it pickled too.

Unless you cut it up small and fry it crispy with corn meal coating, it will be slimy.

@Ronrybs We have a small local mill that makes the best corn meal. I use it for my fried corn bread and baked corn bread.

@1creekgirl I might give it a whirl if we could get US style corn meal over here. Very hard to come by and I do miss a decent corn bread

@CarolDM That brought back a memory from many years ago of shelling peas of some kind on my Grannie's porch.

Your okra looks good! I love okra, I can eat it fried or stewed. When we put up tomatoes , we put up okra and tomatoes together sometimes, I love it over rice.

If you decide to try the fried okra, be sure to cut it into small pieces (about 1/2 inch) and use plain corn meal, not self rising.

I've had it fried and liked it. I'm unable to cook anymore. It used to be one of my favorite hobbies.
