The verdict is in. Much like everyone else in my family, it seems, I’m going to need a new knee. Not now, though. For the time being, a cortisone shot, physical therapy, and a brace will hopefully keep things (and surgery) at bay. Truthfully, the pain isn’t all that much, it’s just the knee buckling on me that concerns me. So, if we can get therapy and the brace to help that then I won’t mind. Meanwhile I’ll be playing with my adjustable bed to get it in a good position for my knees....and back. Sheesh, I need a back rub.

At least you can put it off for a bit which is good. You will be a new person once you do have the surgery. My friend is back to skiing after years of shots and pain meds.

That’ll work wonders for me!!! I’ve never skied before! (I did that to my gynecologist who did my hysterectomy....he told me I’d be able to wear a bikini the next year, to which I replied, “Really? I’ve never been able to wear one before!” ) And with all these minimally invasive procedures they can do now (the x-ray didn’t show any structural damage, just the bone-on-bone cartilage deterioration) I hopefully won’t have to ever have the knee replaced.

@FourWalls . It reminds me of the old piano joke. Will I be able to play the piano after surgery? Yes. Good, I've never been able to play it before. I wish you the best.

That goodness you have that option. I have heard nothing but good things about the surgery.

This just started, and I’m not in a lot of pain right now. You never know what physical therapy can do, too!

If it helps there are a number of great braces for knees that really work.

I’ve been reading up on things. They’ve really advanced since my aunts had surgery in 2007. (Two aunts, four new knees!) Since my issue is cartilage wear (it’s bone on bone), they actually have minimally invasive surgery that can pump artificial cartilage into the knee joint (I think it’s made out of rooster combs). Nothing this year, I hope and pray. I’ll give PT and the brace time.

That's good that you won't have to have surgery right away and that you aren't in a lot of pain. I think a knee buckling would be scary to me as you never know when it's going to happen.

It would be good if you can put off surgery for a while.

Don't put it off too long. Get it over with as soon as it's necessary. The knee is harder than the hip; so make sure you take ALL the therapy that is offered. I quit early (long story); and my knee doesn't have the proper mobility. Good luck.
