This is a true crime story from my country. It is a story about the molestation and murder of a very young girl and if you don't want to read about this topic you should close this discussion now. It is a story that makes me very sad, but I would still like to share it because it shocked me when I read it, and maybe it could have been prevented.
In 2001 a Danish man with an intellectual disabilty was told that he had to leave the institution where he had been living for several years. He had living there because of he had raped someone in the past. Those institutions are very expensive, so they want the residents to move into ordinary apartments when it is possible. When they considered this man ready to move out they told him about their decision, but he wanted to stay. They told him that he would have to move out anyway.
They found an apartment for him in a large apartment block, but he didn't receive any supervision after he moved out. Shortly after he moved into his apartment he molested and killed a 4-year-old girl who lived in same apartment block. His wish was fulfilled after all, and he was placed in an institution again. He has been living there ever since.
This isn't the first case where the authories released someone who commited new crime as soon as they left, but this case is a bit different because he very, very clearly said that he didn't want to move out. It is so sad that they didn't listen to him or tried to find a different solution like a more gradual integration into society.

This was a huge mistake that they asked the man to leave the institution. I know it probably cost around the same amount of money as a care home for the elderly. At the new accommodation he shouldn't have been with normal people trying to live their lives. It is horrible he killed the 4 year old girl.

@Porcospino I also feel very sorry for the family that lost their little girl. If children are out playing a parent needs to know they are safe.

Yes, it was a huge mistake. He had been living in the institution for years, and I don't understand why they thought that he was able to live indepently without any supervision. It is very sad that they didn't try to find a different solution. I feel really sorry for the family who lost their little girl.

That is true. It wasn't safe at all. He had been living in the institution for many years and they suddenly they expected him to live among other people without any supervision. They should have found a different solution.

Yes, it is really sad. They forced him to move from the instituion to the apartment, and it definitely wasn't the right decision.
