What's in a name?

I check out an online news page each morning. Mostly it has West Australian news. Occasionally something comes up that I feel I have to share here. And today it is a story about a Perth woman who heard that there was a need for jumpers for orphan lambs. Because she was in lockdown, she downloaded a pattern, rediscovered a passion for knitting and has now made over 300 little jackets for lambs. She said knitting has saved her sanity since the pandemic struck. And speaking of lambs, Fiacre (@xFiacre) wrote asking about our favourite words. One of mine is ‘pronking’ which is that stiff-legged bounce that lambs and sheep do when they’re happy or playing. Even Herc in his later years would pronk occasionally. I’ve only learnt the word recently. Be that as it may, can you guess the name of the lady who knits the jumpers? Believe it or not, her name is Mrs Lambkin. I kid you not. Photo is me with one of the many pet lambs we raised over the years.

The ancient Romans knew that already and coined the phrase "Nomen est omen". This is usually translated with, "It's all in the name."

Because a Roman full name was giving a lot of info : the nomen was telling if you were a plebeian or a patrician and often how you were voting, the cognomen could be chosen and modified by yourself, it could be related to whatever you wanted, your job or the color of your hair. And the tribe was linked to taxations and military service, and other administrative things.

@topffer The nomen was their "microchip" to track people.

I don't know that it's very common but it would help keep them warm. We always had ours in a box in front of the fire - at least for the first week or two.

I know that many Italian surnames were given according the profession of the family, the ancestral origins, if they were noble or simple people, as Maluse correctly said "nomen est omen".

The lady that the 'Lambkins' were those who brought the lambs in when they were orphaned but I couldn't find any information to substantiate that.

Very many surnames denote professions or are place names where someone lived or mention physical peculiarities. I have a collection of hundreds of telling German surnames.

@popciclecold If you've never had the chance to be with animals, then they would be scary, especially big animals like horses.

I actually learned about pronking about a year ago when I was at Disney's Animal Kingdom them park. One of the attractions there is a huge safari trek where a truck takes you through various wide open animal habitats. As we were driving through the African plains section, there were several gazelles that started pronking. The driver explained what it was and the word it was called. It was the coolest thing.

It was funny to see Herc pronking. He was usually quite staid. And be careful - don't be a bull in a china shop while you're pronking. I'm not sure you can do it with only two feet.

Orphan lambs find it hard to keep warm so the jumpers will help. It is winter here at the moment and so it is cold, especially at night.
