Let's hear it for the bees

There was an article in our local news on how children who have recently had their tonsils removed are benefitting from small quantities of honey as pain relief. Trials are being carried out in Perth, Western Australia, hospitals to gauge which sorts of honey work best or whether any sort of honey is soothing. Children suffer a lot of pain following a tonsillectomy. In my day, most children had their tonsils out but I’m not sure if that is still the case. The most I remember about my tonsillectomy is that I was promised I’d be given ice-cream in the days after but it didn’t happen. Ice-cream was a big deal in those days. By coincidence, Vince took this amazing photo of a bee just the other day. In one of his photo groups, a member is always putting up incredible photos of insects and this has led him to try to improve his own photos of bees.

@judyev Magnificent pic. Here tonsils are removed now only as a last resort whereas it used to be routine.

It was routine in my day but it must still be happening fairly regularly for them to be testing honey.

Love your picture. That’s a good close up.Honey is one of my favorites foods. Give me a buttered biscuit and honey and I’m a happy camper.

@JudyEv I didn’t know honey would help when tonsils are taken out but honey will sooth a sore throat.

That is an incredible photo and prize worthy! These days, doctors prefer keeping tonsils intact unless they truly need to be removed. Honey works wonders on so many things.

I know they don't remove them so often now but there must be some, at least here, for them to be writing about it. Maybe they were just looking for something newsworthy other than the virus. :(

In my front planter, I've lavender, geraniums and a selection of wild flowers. I've had a few bees and a couple of small butterflies on them. I knew honey has been used as an antiseptic for thousands of years, but not for pain relief. I'd be happier taking honey than pills

It's a shame we've lost so many of the old remedies.

@JudyEv Even worse, Big Pharma is patenting these early remedies and trying to cash in. Although that is the more unscrupulous companies and chancers

That is definitely an amazing photo. Kudos to Vince. I remember being very sick after I had my tonsils out (probably from the anesthetic; and I also remember ice cream. Honey is good for so many things. Have a wonderful Sunday.

That is a great picture. My sister was prone to tonsilitus when she was younger and had it a few times. The doctor said if she had it again she would need her tonsils out, but she never did.

Removing tonsils went out of favour eventually it seems. But there must still be some going on.

@JudyEv It was the case in Italy too, but my family doctors told to my mom that it was not only not necessary but tonsil would have protected me against cold and flu growing up. May be he was right, I never had a cold or flu.

I'll pass on your kind words, thanks. When I was young, most young children seemed to have their tonsils removed.

He is very patient I guess and waits till the bee is in the right spot. There is another photographer who does wonderful insect photos and she has been an inspiration to Vince too.

The tonsillectomy surgery is very painful and the pain last for several weeks. During the healing period you can't eat normal food or cold food like ice cream and cold drinks as the pain can be unbearable.

The flavour changes depending on what the bees are feeding on. So there is marri honey (where the bees feed primarily on marri [red gum] blossoms), acacia, bluegum, manuka, orange blossom - over 300 varieties.

I know that people take a lot of ice creams when they are getting their tonsils removed. I asked them before and they said that it give them relieves.
