County Fairs

Hi My Lot,
Normally I would be doing posts this time of year telling you about the different little county fairs I had attended. All of them in my state have been cancelled due to Covid . Personally I agree with why they did it.
So I was tempted to complain about it. But I want to try and stay positive, so instead I think I will say things I like about the fairs instead!
I love to go to fairs. Particularly the small county ones. I think you get to know a lot about an area by the types of things at it's fair. I like to watch people. I like seeing the elderly couple looking at the cattle. I like seeing the teenage girls who are wearing some trendy outfit, probably hoping to see the boy they like. I like seeing the families and the kids running around with cotton candy. I like seeing people looking at exhibits.
I like seeing the exhibits from the 4-H kids (I was one) and I like seeing the exhibits from adults. Woodworking, photography, sewing, re-purposing, furniture, cakes that looked amazing on the first day of fair and looked melted on the last day of the fair, cut flowers, vegetables, canning, jewelry, quilting. Some have purple ribbons (Grand Champion), some have pink (reserve champion), others have blue (first place), red (second) and white (third). All are winners though for completing a project.
I like walking through the midway day or especially night with the pretty lights on the rides. I like the loud music that usually is played and the excitement , I like watching people trying to win the stuffed octopus or the goldfish.
I like seeing the conservation building - usually has aquariums and animals from local zoos. I like seeing the cattle, chicken, pigs, horses, rabbits etc.
And then there is food, glorious food. I like looking at all my options , do I want the walking taco, the cheese curds, chicken on stick? Mini Donut, Gyro, bratwurst? And it smells lovely cooking.
Then of course there are the vendors - maybe I will buy something. Maybe I won;t. Last year I sat on a bench by a vendor. They were selling these masks in different designs that would light up in sync with whatever music was being played. It seemed to be a big hit with the teenager/pre-teens so maybe this is some trend I don't know about. But I find it ironic now with masks for the pandemic. It was like a sign of things to come.
And then when you realize that there is usually entertainment , bands, magic acts, artists.... Yeah! The fair is like a big collection of stuff that I like.
Do you like fairs?

I like going to the fairs even now. But sadly this Corona has put a stop to all of them as well

Or state fair was canceled due to covid. It’s still going on, but only for participants. Not that I miss it that much, it really hasn’t changed in my adult lifetime, to the point where there are some vendors I could find blindfolded.

Oh wow, I wonder if there are more participants just so they have something to do this year?

It is sad. I think if people could follow the rules it could have been fairly safe, but you know people and following rules

Fairs have always been a fun part of the summer and into fall season here too. Sorry they were all cancelled there. Most of the ones here have not been cancelled, just most decided to skip on the carnival part. One of them is still having a carnival, but not having a ticket booth...they are just selling limited day passes online.
Oh and for some the big concerts have been cancelled.
I haven't gone though, but hope they all have gone well.

I would be curious if there are any spikes in areas that have had fairs.... I think it could be made safer.

@MommyOfEli2013 Good thought. I know there were some big ... uhm "riots" or, if you prefer "protests" in this state (MN). I thought for sure that we'd see a huge spike and we didn't really... at least that's good. I think that those who were rioting didn't mind wearing masks because it doubles as a disguise, and those that were honestly peacefully protesting largely did their part and wore masks to protect others

@FayeHazel That is a good question for sure....guess it would be a good idea to watch two weeks or so after the fair and see how the cases are doing. We had 4th of July festivities and didn't notice a spike during those.

I love fairs. Your descriptions bring back memories of the only one I went to many years ago. It's hard to find someone to go with, as I enjoy it more when I'm with someone. Ours is canceled too this year. It would be taking place about now.

I love fairs and carnivals. Hate that we don't have any this year. I honestly don't think they would've made things too much worse if they had minimum attendance to them. Though i guess rhat would also be hard to do, cause they have to be around for more than just the normal few days

I know. Me too. You're right, I think that if everyone could have followed the precautions it would have been fairly safe. But... people are following rules...

I remember going to a few County Fairs as a youngster. The quaintness of the environment is what I really liked. And the food, games of chance, rides and seeing animals weren't bad either
