What I thought were wild strawberries were not

I went to a nearby park yesterday for some hiking. While there I spotted what looked like a wild strawberry. They are my favorite berries. I got very excited and started looking for more. I managed to find a handful of them. When I got home, ready to eat them, I smelled them but there was no smell. I washed one berry and tried it. It was firm, dry, and tasteless. I found that shocking. I looked it up online and found out that these were not wild strawberries but mock (fake) strawberries. These are odorless, tasteless, firm, and dry. And they don’t have seeds on the outside like wild strawberries do. Supposedly, they are not poisonous and are okay to eat, but why do that when there is no taste or juiciness. I threw them out. I had no idea that there are berries that look like wild strawberries but are not. Now I know. Lesson learned! So much for wild strawberries... The picture is of the mock strawberries.

Well, I had fun searching for them, so that's a good thing.

I'd be super excited to find wild strawberries too! But oh darn - I guess it's not even worth a smoothie?

Nope. And I don't know 100% that nothing will happen after I eat them. Better not chance it, especially if they are tasteless and flavorless.

@lovebuglena That's true - you don't want to get hives or something. But it must've been fun picking them anyway.

@much2say Yeah. I really enjoyed myself. It was exciting finding one and then another and another... And I wanted to keep on looking, even after hubby said it's time to go. Perhaps it is good that I had no idea they were not wild strawberries because I would have missed out on the fun of searching for them. I wouldn't have picked them up had I know there were not good to eat.

That is strange! I have never run across these kind of berries. I love strawberries because of their taste and if they have no interesting taste then I would also throw them out. Pretty disappointing!

@lovebuglena Maybe the animals or birds like them.

@kanuck1 Could be. Some of them that were supposed to have the berries were empty.

I'm just glad to hear that they are not poisonous, since you went ahead and tasted one.

I tasted it and spit it out. No point in swallowing tasteless, flavorless berries.

Now thinking about it, I think I've seen them in that same park last year. But I don't remember if I had picked them up or not.
