Do you know gulasch?

Germany
September 3, 2020 3:38am CST
Hello Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening to all my dear mylotters I woke up with a good weather. Sunny and cool air. So nice to enjoy a good walk later Today, I will prepare some German delicacies ``Gulasch`` which is a beef boiled in some sauce that I don`t know how to make but love the taste so much The taste is very similar to a beef boiled in soy sauce, tomatoes and onion but of course there are still some spices they put to make it more tastier. That`s why I buy some ready mix gulasch sauce and put them in a slow cooker just to satisfy my cravings to it How about you my dear mylotters? Do you know Gulasch? What do you crave for today? I hope you can share it with me here Have a great day and Happy mylotting Photo: google

Gulasch (or Goulash) is a dish of stewed meat and vegetables which originated in Hungary It has become popular, or at least, well-known, in many countries, including the UK. In Hungarian, 'gulyas' means 'herdsman', so originally it was simply 'a stew made by the herdsmen', just as the British have 'shepherds pie' and 'cottage cheese' - I'm sure there are similar names for dishes in Germany and the Philippines. What makes it different today from other stews is the use of paprika, though, of course, paprika (and tomatoes, potatoes and bell peppers) were unknown until they arrived from the New World in the 16th Century. The British version also often uses soured cream or creme fraiche to thicken it, though many other countries don't do that. Perhaps it's worth mentioning that Hungarian paprika has hardly any heat at all and has more of an 'earthy' taste to it than other spices which are also sold as 'paprika' - it can be confusing! Here is a German recipe.I think that "500 g Gulasch, (gemischt)" must mean "500g of Meat (mixed) [cubed and ready for a Gulasch]" because that is, otherwise, what is missing from the ingredients listed! You can use beef, pork, venison or veal (or even chicken) or a mixture as the meat. The original 'gulyas' would have used the tougher portions of meat and tenderised it by long, slow cooking.

I like to add a bit of soured cream to mine, Hungarian paprika has no heat, in fact in the French Islands and Morocco they call it "Piment Doux", I had to research to prepare a Moroccan dish.

@LadyDuck In Britain, even with the fairly recent interest in different herbs and spices, it is still difficult to find anything other than that labelled just 'Paprika' or occasionally 'Smoked Paprika' (which is Spanish and hot). Nobody seems to know what I'm talking about when I specify Hungarian paprika. Of course, I can buy it on Amazon but I'm talking about the usual shops and supermarkets we have here.

That looks delicious and now I am craving it. I always buy the goulash mix from either Maggi or Knorr, I don't know how to make it from scratch. My Mom always made it from scratch and it was wonderful. I like mine with spaetzle and a nice salad.. I will make that again after I get moved.

Goulash is a favorite of mine too. I usually make it during the winter months since it's a good meal for a cold day.

Never heard it. Actually, I never eat any Germany foods - it's not common here. But based on the looks and how you describe it I think we have something similar (at least almost) with it.

That's OKm @Butterfingers, (though you don't know what you're missing). There's also a very good Mushroom Goulash which is made in much the same way and with the same spices as the meat version. I guess you could call it the "woodsman's soup" rather than the "herdsman's soup" (which would mean that the name would have to change in Hungarian and would then have to be different in German, English and any other language which borrowed the word from the Hungarians).

I know and LOVE Gulasch. I used to it at this European food market that came to Bolton (England) where my husband's from and we used to live. The market came to town every year and brought together food sellers who sold all this AMAZING food. Even the supermarkets in Botswana have started selling it - although it's not quite as good as authentic Gulasch Today I'm craving pizza. Hope you enjoyed your Gulasch
