It is mackerel for lunch today. This is the time for mackerel and sardines to be in market in abundance. Their breeding time is just over and time for baby mackerel and sardines to be in the market. Their taste is the best at this time. We prepare fish curry of mackerel also shallow fry them with chilly and turmeric paste. Special dry curry of sardines is speciality of this area. What did you have for your lunch?

We never buy fresh fish but I'm sure it's good for you to buy them from the markets.

@msdivkar We don't buy much frozen fish either. Mostly we have fish if and when we eat out.

I had mackerel fillets for supper yesterday. I generally rub salt and pepper into the flesh and pan fry it skin side down in a little oil for 5 minutes until the skin and edges are crispy, then turn it over and give the flesh side about 3 minutes. I serve it with a squeeze of lemon and a little chopped parsley or a gooseberry sauce (in France, gooseberries are called 'groseilles à maquereaux' or 'mackerel berries' and are good with any oily meat such as goose or mackerel). Last night I served it with braised fennel - the fleshy bulb of the plant -dressed with lemon juice and some french fries. It was absolutely delicious. Our mackerel is best when it is cooked over hot coals within 30 minutes of being caught. Of course, you can only do this if you live by the sea and catch them yourself (or know someone who does). One whole mackerel is usually quite enough for one, though I have known people who could eat two at a sitting!

@msdivkar In my childhood, we lived 80km from the sea but the fish came by train in boxes of ice, so it was chilled, not frozen. Our fishmonger would collect his stock in the early morning from the railway station and go round the local villages with a horse and cart selling it. Even after such a long journey and despite there being no such thing as freezers (except for making the ice for the fisheries), it was still tolerably fresh, or at least, edible. My mother didn't like fish, so we rarely had it, but there was nothing like mackerel or salmon or sardines on the cart. He only had plaice, cod, haddock and skate and I remember that he would fillet the plaice (a flat fish) on the flat part of the cart while you waited.

@owlwings Nice old memories. Thanks you for sharing them. Mackerel and Sardines I feel are tropical fish found mostly in this part of world. September to December used to be season for them but now because of deep seas fishing boats they are available throughout the year and mostly deep frozen. We can't compare the taste of freshly caught seasonal fish to these frozen fish. Local fishermen still catch the fish on our beaches with traditional methods. I had posted recently about purchasing freshly caught mullet fish on one of our busiest beaches, Miramar beach, close to the city of Panaji where I used to visit quite often. You can get them at reasonable price if you are lucky.

Thanks for sharing. Your recipe sounds good for a well known restaurant but what drove me to my childhood is the your mention of fresh mackerel roasted on coal. There were no gas or kerosene stoves then the cooking was done on wood fired chullahs. Fresh mackerels, just cleaned and with a dash of salt, were often roasted in such chullahs. It is only in memories now. The sea coast is just 2 kms from where we stay. Fresh fish were carried by women in bamboo containers on their heads to the markets. Their first stop used to be near our house. We used to get our supplies from them. The system no more exists. The freshly harvested fish even by local fishermen goes to the freeze and brought to the market next day. Thanks for reviving my old memories.

@msdivkar - Yesterday I finally decided on tilapia fish. I had it with some rice and broccoli. Sometimes I make a curry gravy for my talapia fish. It's delicious.

Everything is experience and people from Goa knows everything about fish. Fish seasons were more pertinent in olden times when fishing was limited to coastal regions now a days with motorised deep sea fishing you get all fishes round the year.

I like that mackerel but it's difficult to find fish you wanted here. Everytime they're buying fish only one kind.. Not tasty. Don't know the name. I had fried veggies with rice and Dal.
