Little Farmer Girl

The sunshine came out late this morning and made for a beautiful autumn day. Hubby suggested a ride in the convertible to nowhere. We love doing that. We wound up at our favorite local orchard and decided to go apple picking. We usually do that with our grandkids, but not this year. We wore our masks, gloves, and kept far away from the few people we saw. We threw out our gloves and sanitized our hands. On the way home, we stopped at our younger son’s house to drop off a bag for apples for him, one for his girlfriend, and one for her mother. I’m making apple crisp as a treat after dinner. What a pleasant afternoon acting like a little farmer girl!

Apple picking is a fun activity but the last time we went we paid like 17.00 for a few pounds of apples! Definitely cheaper at the store!

You are so money conscious I don't know how much these cost, and hubs didn't complain, but it was fun and the apples are fresh.

How many did you pick all together? I remember decades ago going to Cloud Croft with mom and we picked apples, I didn't climb any of the ladders but mom did. We only got about 20 lbs total, not much but enough for mom to make an apple pie.

I didn't count them or pay attention when hubs had them weighed and paid indoors. He didn't want me to be inside. All I know is that we picked lots and will be eating an apple a day to keep the doctor away!

@DianneN no apple tree here unfortunately, there's a mango tree in front of our house. Zek is sleeping at the side of my laptop

There's nothing better than making a dish from things you've picked yourself. It's coming up to blackberry season here. I love a blackberry pie made from freshly-picked blackberries.

@DianneN Ah yes, the age old problem of returning home with far fewer blackberries than were picked. You'd think we'd have grown out of that by now We're settled again. Just. I suspect you may have read my discussion about it by now.

I agree! Our blackberries have been picked and are all gone now. I only had enough for one blackberry cobbler and the rest were eaten as I picked them. Are you settled in your house, yet?

Was it an orchard that allows people to go pick (like a u-pick place), or did you and hubby illegally sneak onto someone's property? lol

That sounds like so much fun. I bet the apple crisp is delicious and more so since you picked the apples. I like getting up and going like that with no destination in mind. I've done that in the past and I know I will in the future too when everything heals and life is normal once again.

In our dating days, Hubby and I used to drive around and try to get lost . Oh how fun to go apple picking! I don't think our local farms have that . . . we have to drive a bit to get to an apple orchard. What kind of apples did you get? Apple crisp sounds perfect to top off the day!!

@DianneN We've tried to get lost but never got lost . Oh - you got a huge variety! Reminds of me when I used to make baby food . . . I LOVED getting different apples to make applesauce! I love the spontaneity of you two !

We've done that, too, getting lost on purpose! We picked pink lady, Braeburn, Mutsu, Ida Red, Fiji, and Stayman. They can all last a long time and some are my favorites for eating an apple a day. This orchard was only 45 minutes away, but there is one closer. We just drove past it, looked at each other, turned the car around, and voila!

@much2say Same with us, and GPS wasn't invented back in our day. I always seem to buy way too much, but at least these won't rot quickly like nectarines and peaches. Oh, applesauce! Great idea! You sure took such great care of your kids. I used to make my own baby food, too! Thank you! We are two nuts with no children tying us down. You will do the same!

@lovebuglena It is a dessert that can be made a variety of ways using oatmeal or not and a streusel topping. There are so many recipes online. It's best to serve it with a scoop of ice cream. It's easier if you look it up. I can't explain it any better unless I write a recipe here for you.
