Just when I thought I had a good ear for English!

Good morning/afternoon/evening! (depending on where you are) Last night I was feeling like watching something new. I am a huge fashion lover, I love fashion brands, garments, and I always make sure to wear what makes me feel comfy, but also fashionable. Thing is I found out Rihanna just launched a fashion documentary introducing her new collection for 'Fenty X Savage' but you must wonder why the title of my post? Here it is why such phrase popped up in my mind, during the show break there were singers, among them rappers, so when I tried to understand rap music I just couldn't, not for its lyrics, but how quick they sing. Oh my God I feel like all these years of English grammar study plus ear training went right out of the window, haha. I confess I learned some rap songs lyrics because it was so funny, but when it is a new song that I have never heard before I am like 'what the *eck is this' haha I got a question, either you are a native English speaker or non-native English speaker, do you guys understand a rap song when you first listen to it? Photo courtesy of Google Image, thank you Google.

I barely understand rap singers, and don't even care for rap. I am so happy that you love fashion and fashion brands. So do I!!!!

I am relieved that it isn't just a non-native English speaker struggle. So you guys who are native English speakers have this struggle too? I always wondered if natives got the lyrics when they first listened to it, but apparently not. Thanks for clearing that up for me Dianne. I always knew you were a fashion lover, it would've been impossible if a woman like you would not care about it. Dianne you scream fashion from head to toe! Lovely!

@jvicentevalera Yes, it's very difficult to understand most of the rap with the way they speak, how rapid they do it, and the loud music. Ha ha! I love clothes, shoes, and handbags and what's hot and what's not! I've been like that since I was in elementary school. I would love to critique every woman's wardrobe and look if I could.

@DianneN you're right about rap music Dianne. Aw what you said about fashion is like music to my ears. I been like that since college I guess. In high school I didn't pay attention to it, once in college my love for fashion emerged. Despite that I can't afford expensive brands, I do read about them, how to match them, when to wear them, when not to. Whenever a notification pops up from YouTube on my phone's screen is about a fashion label I am subscribed to, so I get to see their live stream fashion runway. Last week I watched Versace Spring/Summer 2021 collection, and there were many outfits that left me gagged! Haha I can talk about this for hours!

I rarely listen to Rap --- I have no interest in the genre, but when I do, understanding what they are saying is often an issue. But I have heard classic rock styles that are the same.--- difficult to understand. Don't kick yourself too hard, it isn't necessarily you.

What a relief! Most of mylotters here pointed out the same. They found hard to understand the songs. As for me kicking myself hard you were right about it, I always do that, I dont know why my friend.

Oh thank you very much for clearing that up for me Valerie! It is really helpful because I was like, if I am an English student, do I have to figure out what a rap song says too?

I tried to understand rap lyrics but I didn´t like it. There was one from Eminem that I tried hard to understand and I did but I found it very bad lyrics. It was something about his life and I didn´t want the way he wrote it. Nope, I prefer the songs that I can understand well and words are pleasing to my ears.

I can not at first go. And even with listening to it again and again helps only a bitSo I end up understanding it in the context it is being sung Not a fan of rap music. Except for few I find that most of them are trash. But yes appreciate the skill of singing so fast and not loosing the rhythm.

Rap songs and even music, in general, won't always follow the standard grammar rules as you know them because they have what we call 'poetic license'. Artists can bend the rules and play around with language to add to the art, to make it all rhyme etc. I don't listen to much rap anyway. But even with other genres, some lyrics don't always make sense. And my English vocabulary is pretty broad.
