Got a new addition to our household—a praying mantis

There is now a third member in our household—a praying mantis. Hubby saw it by our door yesterday when he went home to drop off the groceries while I was shopping at another store. He decided to keep it as a pet. He picked me up from the store with the praying mantis in a shoe box filled with leaves and showed it to me. I was surprised I didn't freak out when I saw it.
We went to a pet store and hubby got him a micro habitat, with a glow in the dark thingy for it to climb, as well as terrarium moss and something to put on the base of the habitat that looks like wood splinters. Not sure on what it's actually called.
He also bought flightless fruit flies and crickets for it to eat. He fed it some crickets already and it devoured them. He didn't try giving it the fruit flies yet.
I wonder how long the praying mantis is going to survive. I named the praying mantis Simon. But since I don't know how to tell the gender of the praying mantis it could very well be Simone.

It's too bad you can't find the poor thing a mate, so they can live a happy life together in the little habitat thing your husband got.

@lovebuglena Very interesting to know. I’ll keep that in mind next time I come across a praying mantis.

I did a search online and seems they are not protected species.

They can live for a good while if kept healthy.

Hubby wanted to keep it. If it were up to me I would not. I want all creatures outside.

I think Simon should be out in the wild. They are a rare sighting. Good luck.

It turned out to be a female. We feed it crickets as that's one of the things they eat. She is good.
