The renowned spiritual master, Swami, Rokonunda, had a very long beard, and long hair as well. A would-be student before he could become a student of this master, was requested to ask of the master one question, and only one. The master would either accept them, or reject them, based on the nature, and quality of their question. One would-be student asked him a fairly simple question, this one: "Why do you grow both your beard, and your hair, so long, and is there a spiritual reason behind your doing of that?" The master, smiled, as he answered him: "Well, that is three questions, which one would you like me to answer?" "The last one." the student blurted out. "Ah," the master said, "What is the spiritual reason, for me having long hair, and a long beard?" "Now, that is still two questions too, but I will answer both of them for you here, today." "In fact, I will answer the third question for you too, as I have warmed to your questions, which no other student has ever asked me before." "Now, the reason that I have both long hair, and a long beard, is to keep my neck warm." "The spiritual reason behind my having both long hair and a long beard, is to remind me that in life, the long journey is not complete, until the fat barber cuts your hair." "The fat barber is God." "Life is not over until the fat barber cuts." "This is also where that other famous saying comes from about the fat lady singing." "Now, how does that one go exactly, now?" "It ain't over till the fat lady sings." "And, I want God to take a long time over me, in cutting both my hair, and my beard," he said. A triple whammer, a 3 in one question, might have been ok.

Yes, we have to let our hair down to do that, and to let go of our own exclusive, often selfish, only self-directed reasons for doing things. We must love and let go, for no other attached reasons, other than our openness to see truth, and to love openly, unreservedly too.

I actually find that most religions have their selfish streak about them, especially those religions that claim a certain exclusivity about them.

May be the apt answer for modern day Swamis who are equipped with the facilities to do that but our old swamis and saints lead a secluded life away from worldly facilities pursuing their goals of education to the masses.

Yes, long hair and long beards are still a big part of the Jewish religion too. Some sects of the Jews believe that they should never cut their hair as a sort of act of sanctification to God, a pledge to him, that reminds them of their everlasting connection to God. One sect of the Jews was called the Nazerites. The Sikh religion also has a belief in having long hair. Here is an article about the benefits of having long hair.

That's a good reason for the long hair and beard.

Thanks. I am glad you saw the humour in my piece. The barber who cuts our hair, represents the judge, who will ultimately judge us, and "cut" us back/down to size too.

That reminds me of an interview. The interviewer told the candidate. This final question will decide: "Which came first, the egg or the chicken?" Bang came the reply "The chicken". Then the interviewer "Explain". The candidate "Sorry, you had asked the final question already". Yes, if it is matted hair, the fat barber has to spend even more time in untangling it!

Thanks, siva. I bet that he didn't get the job, though! I heard about one spiritual master who had a problem with women admirers. He grew his hair, and beard long, and then left them matted and greasy looking too, so that he could drive them away from himself, these naive obliging women. He didn't trust his control over his own libido, it seemed. At least, he admitted to this, not like some American evangelists, who willingly, it seems, fall into this trap too. The fat barber would have his work cut out for him here too, in both cases.

@Shiva49 Yes, l think you are right there. Women seem more attracted to the spiritual paths, even if they include bald middle aged men on them.

@innertalks In fact, I heard women are more enamored with bald men. Also, women are more attracted than men in such spiritual pursuits to my reckoning. So the fat barber has the job cut out for him!
