Calling all people who have ever had a dog.

So, I have two dogs, and I adopted one, Sadie, who is 8,, almost a year ago. Two weeks after I adopted her, she started bleeding (but no blood was in her urine). Since all reports said she was fixed, I thought it was a urinary tract infection. I took her in, and the vet thought the same thing However, a few months later she started bleeding again. I took her in to the vet again, and he said she might have a remnant of an ovary, thus the bleeding. But he treated her for another urinary tract infection because the first time around the bleeding stopped a week after the medication, and the second time it seemed to work too. I don't know if the medicine really worked, or if the bleeding would have stopped anyway if there is still part of an ovary inside. I think she's going to start bleeding again because she's spinning on her rear again, which is what she does every time she is about to bleed. She doesn't drag her rear end, she just spins on it. Are any of you familiar with this behavior? I can't know for sure if she is fixed, but the woman I adopted her from got her from a rescue, and one thing rescues do is spay or neuter their dogs. Does anyone have information that could help me?

I had no dogs, but one of my friends is a vet and I just called to ask. It could be an ovarian remnant syndrome. If it is the case, the bleeding should happen every 6 to 8 weeks. Ultrasound may be used to check if there is an ovarian tissue left. It should be performed while the pet is in heat. If the dog is spinning the vet should check her glandes, it could be an irritation.

This is definitely odd. I wish I could help you. Is there another vet you could just ask and get their opinion? See if they say anything different.

I have no experience with any of our dogs doing that, but maybe the next time you could consider getting a second opinion and take her to a different vet. If she clearly did not have a urinary track infection, giving her meds for that is not healthy.

@AmbiePam Sorry I have no idea about it. When I got my dog that I had many years ago fixed she was fine and no problems. I am sorry for your dog having to go through this. My ex which was my husband at the time was a mailman and someone on his route had puppies and asked if he wanted one and he called me and I said yes. She was so tiny. I got her fixed and she was fine so sorry I have no answer for you.

Poor, Sadie. Maybe you should try to consult another vet.
