Our Big Birthdays 2021 Holiday Cancelled

United Kingdom

Yo. How are you all? I'm not too bad. Just had a few days off work with a few more coming up. On Tuesday and Thursday this week, I went over to see my parents. Dad had recently had a fall and hurt himself so I'd gone over to see if he needed any help with anything. He's alright but would be better if he took advice. On Wednesday, I met up with my best friend at the park near me. We went for a lovely muddy walk along the canal. There was a bit of a path that was unfamiliar so, of course, I suggested going along it. Turned out I had been on that path before, but not for a while, and I couldn't remember exactly where it went. We followed it through a field. I knew we were heading back towards my home, just not exactly where it would bring us out. It was nice to get outside, go for a walk, and talk to someone different for once! Yesterday (which was Thursday), my big sister (dorypanda) also came over to see our parents. Dory gave me a lift to the supermarket and back home. While we are at Mum and Dad's, I got an email saying that the holiday we had booked for next year had been cancelled by the host. The holiday was intended to be a celebration of various birthdays. My husband and Dory's partner both turn 50 next year while my two sons will be 21 and 16. We'd talked about having a getaway together before, and decided it would be nice to do it then. There were to be 8 of us altogether (me, Dory, the four I just mentioned, and my nephew and his partner). The message via the holiday letting company was that the host has had to close her lettings business due to the impact of Covid. This made me feel sad for the host. I mean, cancelling because of uncertainty or because of rules that mean there would be too many of us - that'd be annoying. But it's a shame that it's because the entire business has had to close. Hopefully, we will be able to book something else, but it might be tricky if our 'rule of 6' still applies by then. The good thing is, I'll get my deposit back. That deposit will cover what I've spent on Christmas presents! Honestly, though, if a cancelled holiday is the worst thing to happen during these times, I don't have a lot to complain about. I hope you're all doing well. Let me know how your day/week/month/year/life is going in the comments. I must dash now as I am back to work today. Ta ta for now.

I am really sorry you had to cancel your party. We are also limited to what we can do... no more than 5 people even in private gathering. Well, let's say we are lucky to be healthy and hope for better days soon.

We can't currently have more than 6 in any gathering (well, with the exception of where households are already made up of more than 6, of course). This year, we've had my husband's weekend away cancelled and had to reschedule something I was meant to do for my birthday. We also had some trouble with having to find alternative accommodation for the holiday we did get when the original got cancelled. The way I see it, though, is we've just missed out on some time away. We haven't lost money on anything. We've still been able to do some things, and we are grateful to have our health. We're very lucky to have things to get cancelled!

@LadyDuck it is a shame you couldn't celebrate as you planned but good that you have your health and everything. I celebrated my 40th birthday in October (and my 1st anniversary). We have had to postpone one thing, but I was lucky enough to have been able to enjoy other things and to know I still have my birthday present to look forward to, albeit 7 months after my birthday!

@pumpkinjam It is limited to 5 here, with the same rule where households are already made up of more than 5 people. My birthday was back in February and I had planned a party for the 29th of the month... we went into lockdown the day before. I do not complain, we are retired and with no financial or health problems, we will meet our friends and family again in the future.

Thank you. I'm sure we will get to do something fun. If not, we all (hopefully) have lots of years left to enjoy. We also facetime with our some of our children and our grandchildren. We're so grateful that such technology exists, especially as the distance between us means we can't visit them often anyway. Having our health and happiness is plenty for us for now.

So far so good. Nothing much to do just enjoying mylotting. Good thing you helped your father. Meeting with friends is not allowed here for now so I have to see them on Video calls

We're limited as to what we can do with other households. I can go to my parents to provide care. We can meet up with one person outdoors for exercise, so that's what I did with my friend.

Yes, and I'm sure we'll be able to make new plans for something amazing. I've been looking at cruises in 2023 ready for my youngest son's 18th birthday - we should be out of lockdown by then ??

That is a shame, both for you and for the business owner of course. I hope the holiday situation picks up again before too long. Glad you at least got out for a bit of a change - I also went for a very muddy walk in the woods with a friend yesterday!

My thinking is that I've been lucky enough to have regular holidays for the past few years, and I'll be able to enjoy more in the future. It was lovely to get out. I keep saying I'll go for a walk before or after work every day but then I don't. We were lucky that the rain stopped long enough to enjoy our walk.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Glad to hear that you were able to get out and take a walk. Sorry to hear that your trip was cancelled. Maybe you will be able to go next year. Nothing going on here at the Lake Erie shore. Have a good day.

Dad is doing well. He's big enough to bounce The holiday was planned for August next year so we were hoping it would be I'm sure we'll arrange something else. Oh, Lake Erie - I like lakes. We have a small lake nearby but it's actually more like a really big pond! Still nice to wander over there where we can forget we live in a large town and pretend we're in the countryside!
