Does Anyone Still Wear Girdles?

When I opened myLot to respond to comments tonight, a Blair ad popped up that featured a panty girdle. I haven't seen one of those for a long time. When I was in Junior High School my mom bought me a girdle and told me young ladies should wear them with slim dresses. She said I should reveal enough to show I'm a woman but only enough to show I'm still a lady. Fast forward. I can't remember when I stopped wearing that confining undergarment. Probably at least forty years ago. When I moved here, I almost stopped wearing dresses completely. I didn't need to. I think a lot of women stopped wearing girdles when pantyhose became popular. After all, part of the function of a girdle was to hold up ones hose. I wonder if young women today even know what hosiery is. If you are a woman, do you remember the days of girdles and hosiery? Are you traditional enough to still be wearing them? I haven't compared notes with other woman about this in decades. I'm hoping these undergarments went away with the 20th Century.

I never wore girdles, I wore dresses all the time and I still do, but I see no need for those things.

I probably never would have worn these without a bit of maternal pressure. My mom was always concerned that I be a proper lady. For her girdles were a part of that, even though I only weighed 99 pounds at the time.

@LadyDuck Petticoats are much more comfortable. We wore those, too. A slips for the slimmer dresses.

@bagarad I went to an all girls school during 14 years because my parents wanted to grow me up like a well educated young lady, but those things were not so popular in our country. I remember that I wore all the time a silk petticoat under the dress, so that they did not look too "transparent".

When I was a child we had garters that pinned to our undershirts to hold up our stockings. Then in the mid 60s I got a girdle. I'm not sure when I switched to pantyhose, but I do remember the early ones wouldn't stay up so I stuck with nylon stockings. You can still buy girdles in the larger department stores but the "small" these days is no where near as small as the small, "cast iron" one I had back then. I wouldn't mind getting a corset if I could get one to fit at a reasonable price. I believe it would keep me from sinking down into myself when I'm sitting.

I'm rather glad that these constraining garments are on the way out. I haven't looked for any lately.

Your use of the word garter brought back a memory of the contraption we wore in the late 60s. If we didn’t want to wear a girdle, we wore a belt - like thing with clasps front and back to hold up hose.

I've no idea when I wore wearing them either although these days the models are much different as both my daughters own something if the sort. A week ago I thought about writing about another undergarment that isn't used a lot in America anymore although it could be popular elsewhere still. Maybe I'll write that next. Good to see you. I saw you elsewhere earlier but then forgot to look you up.

Good to see you again, too. Go ahead and write about the undergarment you're thinking of. I'm curious now.

Yes, I remember girdles and hosiery. I've worn those confining things. I haven't worn a girdle in about as long as you. I didn't know they were still around.

I think they still lurk in one one my drawers somewhere. I think it's time to dispose of them. I'd never be able to get into them now.

The last girdle I saw I think was on an actress in an old western. I remember my mom wearing them back in the day.

Isn't it interesting how the culture changes and fashion along with it? Today our look is comfortable and casual.

My Mom made us wear that awful stuff, I hated every minute of wearing it. When I was in charge, I quickly got rid of this "monstrous" piece of clothing and it felt so good!

I remember wearing a girdle in junior high school, complete with the clasps to hold up hose, which I invariably ripped holes in by day’s end. By high school, we had panty hose, a decided improvement but still a pain. I haven’t worn a dress or skirt, much less a girdle in a long time and I probably never will. I have enjoyed reading everyone else’s experiences and ideas.
