A satisfying afternoon

Yesterday was a very dull, grey day. Like being inside a big cloud. All day there was no sunshine and even though it wasn’t actually raining, the air was full of water drops. Today was quite a contrast - colder, but blue sky and sunshine! I decided to seize the chance to get out on my bike, and cycled over to a friend’s house to drop off a parcel. It’s only a couple of miles but I can take the scenic route along the river, over the lock and then up through a little village. It was a bit chilly as I set out but I had my fleecy gloves. Along the river bank I passed quite a lot of people out for a walk, and several of them were photographing the picturesque river, the reflections on the water, the gulls perched on posts… It was a lovely ride, only spoiled by seeing litter dropped here and there along the route. Why do people do that? I resolved to do something about it on my way back once I had completed my errands. So on the way home I watched out for the bits and pieces I had seen, and stopped to pick them up. Luckily I had some spare plastic bags with me, because of course the more I looked, the more I found. By the time I got back onto the main road I had filled my bicycle basket (luckily I have two). I stuffed a bag of random litter into a waste bin on the roadside, but the glass and plastic bottles and the cans I brought home, rinsed out, and dropped in our recycling bin. So after that I felt I had done my good deed for the day! And had a very pleasant outing and a bit of exercise too. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2020.

It is sad to see how dirty people are. It takes not time to bring with you a plastic bag and bring your bottles and other litter to the recycle bins.

@Fleura I always have a folding shopping bag in my handbag, right now also one mask and a little bottle of hand sanitizer.

@LadyDuck It's certainly a good idea to 'be prepared' (as the boy scouts say)

You are right, it is just a habit you have to learn - like remembering to always take a shopping bag!

That sounds like a productive day. You sure got a lot accomplished. And, now the streets are cleaner for maybe five minutes. I'll never understand why people insist on littering, but I see it everywhere.

@Fleura Yeah, I know. Right. People will be people.

It's strange isn't it - because even those same people don't look at a litter-strewn roadside and say 'Oh doesn't it look nice!' Instead they go to some pristine place, and then scatter their litter there!

That was a great thing you do. There is so much rubbish along some roads. It's a great shame.

I can never understand why people go to a place they obviously like, and then spoil it like that - I mean if it was covered in litter when they arrived they probably wouldn't like it and would go somewhere else!

How often you do this? Because I can't imagine how full your recycle bin is if you do that too often.

I try to pick up litter whenever I'm out and about. Luckily it isn't too bad around here; if I just walk to the local shop for example I might find only one or two small bits. The meadow by the river is worse because people like to go there to picnic and drink, but of course they will do that less now the weather is getting colder!

It’s a shame that people are disgusting and careless with their trash. I hope you washed your gloves, too.
