Weeee're off to see the doctor...the wonderful doctor of ours...

I have a routine medical appointment today. I'm not a big fan for my doctor, but I'm too lazy to get a new one. My favorite doctors have treated me like a smart person, and explained the details of what they're doing. I like my dentist for that reason. I've even learned some stuff chatting with him that I've used in my classes. But my current doctor kind of makes me feel like a drug addict, asking about my cigarette or pot smoking, but never complimenting me about the exercise I do, my healthy (optimistic) attitude, etc. I actually can't tell how "smart" he is. Geez, just thinking about him makes me want to reach for a cigarette.

@BarBaraPrz Ah, NOW I understand. Heh. Those were all the rage a few years back. Do people still wear them?

My friend said, "Never use the word 'never,'" and "you shouldn't use the words 'should' or 'shouldn't.'" I think he was trying to be "paradoxical," whatever that is.

I SHOULD tell him about that, just to see what he says.

Each doctor has his or her own style(s). Some chat a lot. Some are reserved. Some show a certain bit of aloofness. Yet if they genuinely want you to control smoking and other things, then it is fine.

If I were more ambitious, I would sell myself as a Ph.D. anxiety reduction expert, and do trainings for doctors in how to help them reduce stress by giving their patients a feeling of control and self-efficacy.

I made it fun. I can be friendly when I need to be. Of course I'm faking it. Hey, I even let them give me a flu shot.

@TheHorse I used to work in the hospital. I am fine with it. Now, I don't want to be in the hospital because of this virus.

For some reason, dentists and doctors don't bother me. Hospitals do, though.

@TheHorse I dont think so. I would have to look. The nurse is who saves your life many times in reality.

@wolfgirl569 Maybe people go into nursing for different reasons, relative to those who go into doctoring.

I find that the nurses I talk to on the phone are funnier and more helpful than most doctors I've worked with. Do you have "advice nurses" with your plan?

@thehorse My doctor suddenly went quite strange before his family got him to retire. I went to see him about a chest infection and he asked “Do you smoke?” I said I didn’t. He open a drawer and pulled out a roll of stickers that read ‘I’m not a smoker’ and stuck one on my shirt. Then he grabbed my by the throat. By this time in life he had developed a really terrible shake in his hand and I was glad it was just my throat he was examining and not something else. Then he told me to go home. I said okay.

Well, maybe it's your chance to educate him regarding his attitude. When he asks about the 'bad' things, maybe you could say, in a jokey sort of way, 'Hey don't I get any credit for my healthy diet and all that exercise? It's enough to make me give it up!' (saying things in a humourous way always helps them go down better, I find) You never know, you might actually make him think a little bit and perhaps opt for a more positive-reinforcement-based approach. Got to be worth a try, eh?

Of all persons a doctor should not pre-judge a person and jump to conclusions. Hope he has turned new leaf putting you at ease.

That is a priority with me . . .a positive, optimistic doctor who acts like we are on the same team and who keeps me informed about what "we" are doing. I hate doctors that know it all.
