Once you stopped thinking about Neil Diamond, today’s tune on the list of favorite songs with “diamond” in the title is probably one of the first ones that came to your mind! Of course I’m not going to disappoint and leave this “gem” of a song off the list. So, here it is!
#5: This Diamond Ring - Gary Lewis & the Playboys
Al...Not Alice.
I remember seeing a photo of Al Kooper wearing a T-shirt that said that.
While the man who helped create Blood, Sweat, and Tears and produced a boatload of albums (including the first Skynyrd albums) might be confused with Alice Cooper in terms of name similarity, there’s no confusing the two music-wise. I don’t know if Alice Cooper would’ve had a hit with “I’m Eighteen Carats.”
And most of you know (or remember now that I mention it) that Gary Lewis, frontman of Gary Lewis & the Playboys, is the son of legendary comedian Jerry Lewis. This was their first single, and biggest hit.
So here it is for your listening and dancing pleasure!
This Diamond Ring
Written by Al Kooper, Bob Brass, and Irwin Levine
Recorded by Gary Lewis & the Playboys
From This Diamond Ring, 1965

Al Kooper was definitely a huge part of the music industry going all the way back to his brief stint with The Royal Teens in 1959. Another member Bob Gaudio later became the keyboard player with The Four Seasons. Never knew he contributed to this classic 60's pop hit.

They need to put Al Kooper in the R&R Hall of Fame.

The good thing is there’s one person on the list you’ve heard OF.
