Our solar panels are working well and providing us with free power

I wrote recently that we have had some free-standing solar panels installed down in the paddock. They had to be down there near the metre-box. The idea is that the panels will supply our household needs and any surplus will feed back into the grid. We’ll receive a small amount for those units. We’ve now had our first account from the electricity company and there was a $6.00 credit which is a great result as the charge is usually around $200. We need to use appliances during sunlight hours as much as possible. It’s early days yet and we won’t do so well in winter when we have more cloudy weather. But in the winter we don’t have to run the big pump on the bore so we might still be able to meet our own needs from the panels. All in all, we’re pretty happy. The photo is of Hercules wishing you all a wonderful Christmas.

We're glad to have proof that we're saving money. We thought we should but it's good to see the proof.

It is expensive here but it will be a good selling point even if we don't stay long enough to pay off the panels through the savings.

@JudyEv I am trying to learn it and maybe a little by little shift towards that direction

The state electricity company used to do very good contracts for installing solar panels connected to the meter, a couple of friends gets about 900 euros/year for 8 square meter on their roof, deduced from the bill. Good for the planet and the purse. But actually they refuse small surfaces like this. I would have installed a few but they are forbidden in the old city here.

@JudyEv "Aesthetic reasons", yes. I paid a new roof this year, and the roofer had to put the same traditional tiles, with three different shades of red, in order to look old

That's a shame that they're forbidden. I guess it's for aesthetic reasons. Those who installed solar panels several years ago earned a lot more for what fed back into the grid but we get a much smaller amount.

@topffer I hope they don't insist on antiquated plumbing to go with the three-shaded roof.

A sweet Hercules, I thought it was his photo. Here we do not have enough hours of sun for too many month, the solar panels are expensive, not worth installing.

I can understand that. It will be interesting to see how we go in the winter. We still get quite a bit of sun in the winter so perhaps we'll be able to keep our bill at a minimum.

@JudyEv They are no more "pushing" the solar panels here, after that recent studies are showing that solar panels are polluting. Solar panels contain toxic materials (like lead) that can leach out as they break down, creating new environmental hazards. As we have hail storms in summer and many solar panels have broken down during those storms, they are no more "suggesting" to install them in this area.

@LadyDuck That interesting to know. I hadn't heard that before. It will be funny - NOT - if they make us take them down in a few years.

@JudyEv yes ma'am, that'd be grand to've. but, 't least the power company credits ya fer what surplus y'ave got. i dunno what the batteries cost here? i do know goin' solar no longer means havin' a huge room fer masses 'f batteries. they've now those lil battery packs that weigh 'bout 50lbs 'n ya can hang'n a wall.

@crazyhorseladycx I think the batteries to store our solar power would cost several thousand each. It will be some years before we save enough to pay for the installation of the panels but it's now one bill less, a good selling point and also good for the environment.

It's a shame we can't afford a battery so we could store power but they are incredibly expensive. Hopefully, one day they'll reduce in price but probably not in time to be much benefit to us.

Nice to know that you are benefitting from solar panel installed in your estate. Saving of $200 is not a small amount. How much did you spend to install those panels?

Oh so electricity company pays you extra for using Solar panels ? or is it like since you are using solar panels you see reduced bill Those Solar panels will be converting solar energy and storing it in Batteries correct ? So I guess you can use them at Night as well.

Because the solar panels are producing power, our bills are reduced. The panels only produce electricity when the sun is shining. We don't have any batteries as they cost too much. Whatever we use at night comes off the grid and we have to pay for it but for the two months just gone, we generated enough power for our needs.

Wow that is nice that you have that not only is it electricity saving but it also is helping mother nature as well. I am also wanting to have one in my place. But the price is a bit high for now to afford one but I think getting one would help me save some electricity cost for my home since we are almost always sunny in my place and having solar panels would be helpful.

@JudyEv Yes it takes time to really have roi on it but it will be very beneficial when you have reached that point and have an endless supply of power for your home. They say that one panel could last 25 years before it becomes inefficient anymore

It's a shame it's so expensive. We put it off for a while but then decided to go for it. We won't save what we paid out for some years but it's still a good thing to have.

@allknowing Ours supplies most of our needs during daylight hours although it's summer here so we have plenty of sunlight. I don't run eg the dish-washer and the dryer at the same time although it might cope. Any excess we produce goes back into the grid and we get a small remuneration for it.

It is hooked up to the main supply as when it is very cloudy the solar panels do not produce anything.
