Relax, world, our Constitution worked just fine. Our Capitol has been stormed before (1954, for instance), and we survived it. I’ll pontificate about that later, but it’s music time right now. So let’s celebrate with a great song that has “lonely” in the title. #6: You’re Only Lonely - J.D. Souther Anyone surprised? Didn’t think so. Although John David Souther has written a few #1 hits (with the Eagles, “Heartache Tonight,” “Best of My Love,” and “New Kid in Town”) this was his only hit on his own. I remember reading an article where he said, “Everyone thinks it’s cool to be a cult figure in music....until you are one.” Sure, he never had massive success on his own, but he had Linda Ronstadt for a girlfriend (she did a few of his songs, too) and the Eagles for friends (and honestly, to this day I’m genuinely surprised why J.D. didn’t “replace” or “fill in” when Glenn Frey died, given that Souther’s first recording was a duet with Frey called Longbranch/Pennywhistle), so he did okay.
