I Have No Words

Usually I can think of something to say about anything that happens. Today, however, I have no words. I’m thankful: our Constitution works, despite so-called “patriots” trying to undermine it. I’m also worried. In 1944 journalist John T. Flynn wrote a book called As We Go Marching: A Biting Indictment of the Coming Domestic Fascism in America. Yes, you read that right: he wrote it in 1944. His thesis was that the mindset that brought Hitler to power was not unique to Germany, and indeed could (and would) find its way into American thinking....in the guise of “patriotism.” Remember, this was written in 1944: When fascism comes it will not be in the form of an anti-American movement or pro-Hitler bund, practicing disloyalty. Nor will it come in the form of a crusade against war. It will appear rather in the luminous robes of flaming patriotism; it will take some genuinely indigenous shape and color, and it will spread only because its leaders, who are not yet visible, will know how to locate the great springs of public opinion and desire and the streams of thought that flow from them and will know how to attract to their banners leaders who can command the support of the controlling minorities in American public life. There’s a quote, misattributed to Sinclair Lewis, about fascism taking over America “wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.” According to Snopes, Lewis did not say that (although there are a couple of quotes from books of his that could be combined and paraphrased into that statement). They do, however, cite a 1936 article in The Christian Century, quoting a man who stated in a meeting that fascism would appear in America “wrapped up in the American flag and heralded as a plea for liberty and preservation of the constitution.” Hoping to hear Rush Limbaugh, the iconic dean of conservative talk show hosts, denounce what happened yesterday, I tuned in to his show today. Instead, he was railing against the way the media covered the riots over the summer of 2020, compared to the attack on the Capitol. Again, I found words failing me when I heard that. TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE A RIGHT. Not now. Not ever. It doesn’t matter how the media portrayed the riots then. We’re talking about now; furthermore, we’re talking about a direct attack on the government of the United States of America. That’s much more than looting a Dollar General (which, don’t misunderstand me, is reprehensible). And Limbaugh just couldn’t bring himself to say what happened was wrong. So, after about 20 minutes of giving him the chance that he never took, I turned him off. Maybe it’s because I believe in God that I have a different outlook on things when someone I voted for doesn’t win an election. Psalms 2 says that God has installed His King, and the nations can rage and plot but nothing changes that. Then again....the same people who said that “God put Donald Trump in power” in 2016 won’t acknowledge that the same God took Trump out of power now??? I really do have no words. (And I’ve sure typed a lot for someone who doesn’t, haven’t I! ) At least The Bee Gees had words:

Crazy yes. Problem is, too many people don't want to think for themselves. They are more inclined to listen to people like Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Roger Stone, to name a few. People who take half-truths and twist them into propaganda to achieve a goal not shared with the people who listen.

Yesterday certainly wasn’t patriotic at all. Weather someone likes who is or isn’t president we don’t do things like braking in a government building. Plenty of people where saying if it was someone of color they wouldn’t have stop that stuff from happening. Whit has in sure is true to some degree. But also they where kind of warned with the speech that Trump had over the weekend encouraging people to storm the capital all because someone is a bad sport (mom in me how I’d put it). All in all it was wrong and they should be punished for what they did.

@cperry2 I’m very sure he has always been that way. I don’t even think he was worry about what happened at the capital either. Why on earth did people want this man in office still for another 4 years. It hurts my head to even try to figure that one out.

I admit I have (a tiny, infinitesimal bit of) pity for the people who rose up to Trump's call. They did what they were asked only to be abandoned, and yes, betrayed, by the man who called them to rise up and encouraged them on. But it proves beyond doubt, Trump has only ever cared about Trump.

@ShyBear88 Some people don't want to have to think. They are happy to let others do it for them. I just wish we could shut down some of the propaganda mills permanently. But with a free press (something I support BTW) that isn't really possible is it?

Yes, yesterday should never have happened. I know it left me gaping like a fish. And the headline this morning, before I bothered to turn off the alarm.... described in my mind, everything I felt. It's unforgivable and unthinkable. I get people have found a passion for protesting, but come on.... has our education system really failed us?

@kaylachan Unfortunately, there is and has always been a great disparity in what is taught in our schools. The quality of education in the United States has fallen for a long time. Only the wealthy can afford to send their children to schools that give the highest standards of teaching and learning, public schools suffer from neglect, financial woes, and mismanagement. I hope some of this is addressed in the upcoming administration.

I said when he ran that he had hopes of becoming a supreme ruler. He gave it one hell of a try too. I also dont believe he is done trying yet. And even sadder is that people are still making excuses for him or trying to distract from what did happen yesterday. I am extremely glad that the majority of our congress held strong against it. Yes you did have a lot to say

I love your post, Thank you for putting it up. I have to say, for someone who proclaims they have no words, you sure put in more than a few. And very good words at that. I believe the assault on our National Capital has done the opposite of what those involved had hoped for. It has cemented Trump's rejection in the eyes of Congress. It has also given this nation a common goal of healing. I sure hope we can use it and come together as a nation to stand against this kind of movement. Regardless, Like him or not, Joe Biden has a nearly impossible job ahead of him.

I think this also cemented Trump’s rejection by a lot of “normal” people. I voted for him in 2016, and I regret that. I truly thought having an “outsider” would be a good idea. Truth be told, I still believe having an “outsider” would be better. Just not that one.

@FourWalls I agree fully. The swamp in DC is still a swamp. An outsider has a chance to fix what ails us. Yet, we need some stronger checks in place to stop an out and out power-grab like what Mr. Trump has been attempting.

You wrote a lot of words and you wrote them beautifully. I'm not religeous and not politically engaged and I'm not even an American citizen, but I think you displayed it as it should be. John T.Flynn was right and it hasn't found it's way only in the USA but worldwide. The last four years it was there but still a bit dormant, but lately and yesterday in particular it showed its ugly face in a nasty way in the US. Seems like an interesting book.

Yes. If it was not so serious, it would be comical to hear the childish wails of "that's not fair" or "he did it first". None of it is right, but let's not misdirect the focus

In all this craziness, the Bee Gees still rule! I agree with what you said; and America finds itself in a very sad situation indeed. Stay safe and healthy.

the whole thing is a mess. the coverage of what happened last summer versus what happened the other day is truly terffiying. There were armed US national guard troops standing on the steps of the congress when the BLA protests happened. there were not, this week when the congress was stormed.
