The day we jammed the coin-counting machine

A recent post about picking up coins on the street and saving them in a jar reminded me of when we took a large container of coins to the bank to be cashed in. You can read the discussion here: https://www.mylot.com/post/3424036/the-loose-change-project from myLotter Yuki (@yukimori.
My husband used to empty his pockets of change each evening and the coins soon mounted up. We lugged the container into the bank and over to the corner. You tipped a number of coins onto a tray that had holes in it and the coins dropped through the holes and disappeared.
However, we’d omitted to take out a paper-clip or two and a couple of buttons with the result that the machine jammed up. We didn’t think to check the contents beforehand. Needless to say, we weren’t very popular with the staff.
Since then, we’ve used plastic coin bags from a different bank and count out the coins into the bags.
The photo is of an English 1927 florin.

I bet you weren't. I'm suddenly reminded of the coin star machines, where you put coins in, and you could get the equelvent in cash (minus a small fee of course).

I don't know why they are so popular, but they used to be. I know coins are cash, but they are also an obvious sign you're carrying money. Paper bills are apparently easier to hide? I don't really know, nor do I care to know the logic. Haven't seen a coin star machine in a while.@Fleura

Why, shame on you!
They are pretty sensitive devices, aren’t they. I know the snack machines here used to have a fit if someone tried using a Canadian quarter instead of an American one.

@JudyEv bummer, such a nightmare totin' all those diff'rent jugs 'nto the bank. i've a lil collection, too. shhh, don't tell the hubs! 's well 's some mint coins. i've thought 've sellin' those 'n some gold 'n silver coins bought prior to the hubs. then i figured that if'n we pass, that'd be a nice lil bonus fer the young'uns if'n i can't get a handle'n this place, lol.

I am fairly certain you weren't the only ones who would jam up the machine. That is an easy thing to do. I've only used a machine like that a time or two. We have a battery operated bank that you put the coins in and it will roll them for you. We take those to the bank for either deposit or switch to paper. We saved $300 once and took a vacation with our pocket change.

sorry I am giggling. Seeing the bank teller looking at you, and handing you a button. "we don't accept buttons, ma'am!"

Going to a different bank was a wise idea

Things like that can happen. I bet it was embarrassing for sure needing them to come over then find out the cause of the jamb.

You must have annoyed the staff of the bank. You never have thought there were paper-clip and buttons in the container.

I still save my small change to go toward my swimming trips. However, it does get raided from time to time these days! And I never quite get enough to take to the bank these days. I had to laugh about the paper clip. I have my own story there
