Freak accident destroys seven cars

The West Australian town of Geraldton is situated some 257 miles (413 kms) north of the capital, Perth. Last Saturday, several vehicles and a shade structure in a shopping centre carpark there were destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at $A125,000. A number of vehicles were totally destroyed in the blaze and the intense heat melted the shade structure under which they were parked. The point I found interesting – and scary – was that the cause of the fire was an electrical fault in an aromatherapy device in the rear of one of the cars. The temperature on the day was 40C (104F) with hot, easterly winds. Temperatures inside closed cars could reach 65C (149F) causing items such as cigarette lighters or pressurised containers to be catalysts for fire. Authorities also said that electrical work on vehicles should be carried out be qualified electricians. A freak accident has now left at least seven families without a car. Most fire-damaged cars are written off. Let’s hope they all had insurance. Photo is of a sculpture at Geraldton of a woman looking out to sea at the place where the HMAS Sydney was sunk by a German destroyer during World War II. I've written about it here: https://www.mylot.com/post/2968264/the-645-men-who-never-came-home

@arunima25 Oh wow! So something a bit similar has happened to you. I'm a bit surprised that it wasn't covered by insurance but how lucky that the car didn't catch on fire. Did you have comprehensive insurance or just third party? And did you live in the US for a time? Sorry to be so nosy. lol

@JudyEv I can see. Once I went to Walmart in Phoenix leaving my car outside in parking lot in sun. When I was coming back to parking lot with shopping cart, I heard a blast. Luckily I was away. The back glass of my car blasted. Later we found that due to excessive heat, the room freshner can on the back seat had blasted.. Insurance didn't cover it

There could easily have been a pet in one although that is much less common than it once was thank goodness.

@JudyEv During the heat of the summer, people seldom leave a pet inside a vehicle.

This is a sad accident. High temperatures cause different kind of issues to people and thd vehicles/properties. We sometimes hear about a solo vehicle catching fire in extreme summers. I hope these families have a valid insurance that would help them buy new vehicles.

I hope they had insurance too. Some people think they can't afford it but then they are very sorry when something like this happens.

I never leave anything electrical in my car and even if I did it won't provide power to anything without me starting the engine. There are so many life like statues in Australia. Are they also true to height etc?

@rebelann All the ones I'm thinking about are life-size but I didn't want to make a blanket decision about ALL of them. This one is more than life-size. lol

Anything electric can explode under certain conditions I remember lightning killed a girl who was having all the mobiles of her friends who had just gone for a dip in the sea.
