Oh, no, another country song! Well, it’s a “slope” instead of a “nope,” because nearly everyone has heard of this guy. And if you were around in the 70s you’ve heard a different version of this song, too, because it was a big pop crossover hit! (Hey, anything to get away from disco in the mid-70s!
) And here it is!
Good Hearted Woman - Waylon Jennings
No Willie on the first version, even though Willie co-wrote the song.
I’ve explained before how this song came about: Willie was playing poker and Waylon saw an ad for an Ike & Tina Turner concert in the paper, touting the pair as “a good-hearted woman and her two-timin’ man.” While Willie’s wife took notes, Waylon and Willie threw the lines of the song out without Willie missing a hand. (No report on how well he did playing poker while he was writing the song.
)
Waylon’s solo version came out in 1972, then the duet version in 1975 (that wasn’t a real concert, just mixed-in audience noise, which was some kind of trend in country music in the 70s
) became the one that everyone knows.
What a classic!
