Crayons are...

United States

Have you ever wondered how Crayons are made? Me neither! I just watched a video on it. I really love the quick "how it's made" clips that DiscoveryUK puts on. It seems pretty streamlined. Parrafin wax, fillers, the colorant (powder form) and then off to all sorts of machines that sort and label it. Automatic packaging but a quality check at the end. Working in art supply factories must be a colorful job. I do color sometimes but I usually use markers or gel pens. If I was to use any kind of crayon it would be oil based and not wax based. Do you have an artistic side?

I'll have to check that out, but they are made of mostly what I thought! Of the wax-y crayons I'd choose Crayola, but I prefer markers or gel pens too.

I remember getting Rose Art stuff as a kid because it was always cheaper. We did get crayola sometimes.

I used wax based crayon when I was a kid. As they are wax based I imagined they were made as explained in the video.

Yes, I'm sure every manufacturer had a similar recipe for crayons. I would be interested to see how crayola makes some of their newer products.

@LadyDuck Oh that was a video recommended to me (hot dogs) but I decided I don't want to watch it. I rarely eat hot dogs, but I didn't want to risk it. That and Bologna, I would rather not know.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am sure you can find on YouTube. I like more to see how processed food is made. After watching hot dogs I never bought again.

@Tina30219 I've loved gel pens since the 90's. They have so many different new ones too. Jelly Rollers are the best. I bought a halfway decent 120 pack a few years ago though.

I prefer gel pens myself. I have had colored pencils, even the really expensive kind! I just like how smooth gel pens and markers are.

That was cool to watch. I remember melting crayons with a magnifying glass when I was a kid. My brother and I would make really cool designs using melted crayon wax. I guess that's about as artistic as I got back in those days.

Hmm. I don't think we ever did that. I know you can also melt them pretty decently with a hair dryer.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I'm sure they melt pretty easily in a microwave oven too.

I've seen TV programs on how crayons are made. It's really cool. I am not artistic in any way, shape or form! I suck!

I can't draw, but I've gotten better with my craftier side. I used to be really horrible.

@LindaOHio I wish I was. I'm getting better at crochet, but one of these days I'd like to learn to sew.

@CarolDM Absolutely. All this talk makes me kind of want to color. I have a few coloring books for times when I'm feeling artistically inclined.

Oh yes, the environment has a lot to do with sparking or dampening creativity. I understand this all too well.

I don't have an artistic side. I nearly bought a colouring book today called colour Cat's farts. But it was $13 so I didn't.

Adult coloring books can be expensive! Maybe check a thrift store, that's where I get mine now.

@paigea Ah right, I understand. I used to color a lot but it's not something that interests me at the moment.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I will check. It just caught my interest thinking my grandson might get a kick out of it. I am sure he wouldn't colour that much, so too much money just for a little chuckle
