Accidental Inventions : Thank Fido for Velcro

United States

The inventor of velcro was out hunting with his faithful hound when he became agitated with burrs sticking to both himself and his dog. Apparently, George De Mestral was a man who looked at things from a scientific mind. He wanted to understand why the burrs stuck to him and his pooch. So he put the burrs under a microscope and studied them in 1941. What he found were little hooks that efficiently bound itself to whatever came in contact with it. He took this information and turned it into a revolutionary way to fasten things without the use of buttons or zippers. Do you use velcro in your everyday life?

A little and I've bought a few packages before but they don't make it easy to figure out our they don't work as well as it seems like it would.

I haven't used velcro in years and I've never attempted to sew it on to anything. I can imagine it would be a headache.

@MarshaMusselman That almost sounds like it was cheaply made or not quality controlled.

@ScribbledAdNauseum the stuff I've bought can also be stuck on with take but then the velcro section does seem like it actually had the velcro on it for some reason.

@snowy22315 Now hollowed trees would be amazing. I would absolutely love staying in one of those. Maybe not living, but staying?

OK, let's go hunting and see what happens. Mushroom hunting that is. Have you seen those places that train dogs to sniff out those really expensive muahrooms? I don't think I have used velcro in quite awhile. And how did I drift off to mushrooms? Sorry!

George de Mestral was a Swiss electrical engineer. I use velcro very little.

Yes, I read a little bit about him from one of the articles I skimmed through. He had a very analytical mind.

Nope. Found this just by googling accidental inventions. I do like stuff like that though. I have Discovery + that I need to explore more.
