Birds Don't Mind the Frozen Bird Bath

Noticed a few Blue Jays out at the bird bath earlier today. It is frozen solid. And too cold to fill it up, it will only re-freeze. But they seem to manage to get water from pecking at the ice. Snapped this photo from inside the patio doors. Forgot to use the flash on these cloudy days. Someone asked the other day if they bathe in the winter. Today they are ice skating it seems. One day I may purchase a heated bird bath. That would involve a very long extension cord. If these frigid winters continue, maybe the investment would be worth it.

@CarolDM Inspirational, really. Nature inspires us in many ways and sometimes we forget to appreciate that.

Those Blue Jays, their beaks are extremely sharp! They can easily break through a layer of ice to get water.

@CarolDM I was wondering about the birds that don't migrate. They probably eat snow, also.

@kobesbuddy Yes they do. I see blue jays, mockingbirds, doves, cardinals, grackles and many sparrows all year.

Maybe you can find one that is battery run with a solar connection to energize it.

I wonder if there's a battery that can be charged via extension cord when the sun isn't shining @CarolDM

The problem is on many of these cold days, there is no sun to charge it.

We used to keep the bubbler going all winter long on our koi pond to prevent it from freezing completely and the birds used to come for drinks. Sometimes a stray cat would wander out but we were lucky that he never fell thru. No bird dinner would be worth that.

@CarolDM I'll have to dig up a photo and do a post of it. I loved those koi, and they could tell the difference between me and my hubby. They would go to 1 particular spot to be fed, and when I went out they went there as I fed them, and when he went out, they stayed away from the pump as he would always be the one to clean the filter and tend to the pump. I think that they could tell that the brightly coloured clothes was me and the darker shirts where my hubby. They were incredibly smart koi.

Good photo. The birds have it rough in the winter time. 33 days until spring.

Their fat little bellies remind me of someone. lol So cute! They can easily peck away at the ice, eat snow, and drink rainwater.

Oh yes they are very popular. It is for this very reason. With cold winters, you cannot keep the water from freezing.
