This time of year I see a variety of birds on my deck. As most of you know.
Have been watching this small Downy woodpecker the last few days. He is the smallest woodpecker in North America. And this is a male, they have the bright red spot on their head.
He is so funny to watch. He will scoot around from peanut to peanut eating. I chopped up peanut pieces very small for him. Yes, I have spoiled the birds now. He loves the smaller pieces. I noticed for several minutes he wasn't moving.
I thought oh no, is he stuck to the ice and snow! I kept watching, nothing. So I got a broom and lightly touched him with the handle. Nothing. He was stuck. I found a piece of poster paper and scooted it under him and he finally flew away. I was so relieved. He has long tail feathers and he was actually stuck.
Happy to see him fly away. And he is very welcome! He is so cute with his markings in this photo I snapped.

A beautiful little bird. I know he was glad to get stuck at your house. Because you set him free. Good Job.

He is adorable. You should become a wildlife rehabilitator. I bet you would really like that.

That is one cute bird. Thanks for sharing about this one. Can you use ice melt that doesn't hurt pets so they don't get stuck or is that type bad for birds? Maybe some birdseed would keep the birds off any ice?
