I have to pull myself out of this depression!

I have depression and have been struggling lately. I've lost all motivation and interest. Things that I used to do for fun are no longer fun to me. Games, movies, etc. I've just been pacing the floor and thinking about what I want to do and then not doing anything. It's driving me nuts.
So, I've decided to re-join myLot because it is something I used to really enjoy and it's a good form of therapy to come on here and have discussions with people from around the world.
I am also going to try and force myself to play some games. I have purchased a couple of new games for my Nintendo switch that are on their way. Yoshi's Crafted World and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
I have to pull myself out of this funk!

Both depression and anxiety can be a pain in the butt. I've experienced both, mostly when I was grieving the loss of a loved one. I am a psychologist, and I chuckle inside when I use the fancy terms that we use to describe the symptoms of depression. You mentioned two. "Anhedonia" is not enjoying the things we use to enjoy. "Lowered response initiation" means not doing sh*t, basically sitting on our butts. One thing I've noticed when if I'm feeling stuck: If I "force" myself to do something (woodworking, making coasters, cycling, hiking, etc.), it increases my motivation to do other stuff! I'm also a big advocate of exercise. When we exercise (even a walk around the block), several hormones and neurotramsmitters are released that decrease depression. Sorry to be so wordy, but depression and anxiety tick me off.

@AngelisaQT Mylot gives me a sense of social interaction that is missing during this Covid thing. Is your body working OK? I suggest a very short walk. No headphones. Become "Zen" and look at the squirrels, the trees, the grass, people with their dogs, and savor all of the above.

Thanks for your response. I have been told by many both my doctor and others who have depression that you just have to try and force yourself to do things so that is what I am doing. Today I forced myself to re-join myLot even though I felt like "what's the point?". Within a couple of weeks I will have some new games that I will be forcing myself to play. I already feel a little better now that I am active here on myLot.

@TheHorse I want to take a walk but it's been raining everyday here so I can't.
Once it lets up I plan on taking a walk to the lake, it's right down the road. That should help.

You say that you were here before and then I saw the link to yu prrofile and I'm sure I remember you
I was away from here for over a year and came back last week. Feels like being back home again. Is that the same feeling you get too?
I am very lucky that I have not suffered from depression. Maybe because I am so wary of it creeping up. My sister suffers and it ruins a part of her life.
I try to be positive on all fronts. I tell myself everything happens for a reason and when times are difficult that they are ttrials. I try and keep myself busy too. Being here helps because someone is active at anytime and so many different topics to read and join.
Welcome back and hopefully we'll see you around a lot!

I absolutely remember you!
Yes, it's a really good feeling coming back.
I try to stay positive as much as possible, it's just easier said than done sometimes. I don't want this depression to ruin my life so I am fighting back as much as I can. Medications only work so much, the rest is up to you to conquer in your head.

@AngelisaQT My sixth sense didn't let me down once agai!
You were very active commenting back and forth quite quickly if I remember right?
You are right about medication. I had to take some way back almost 30 years ago but at some point I threw them away and was determined to get along without them - and it worked! Lots of ups and downs since then but staying positive gets me through. (Hey but being positive in these times is not a good thing either!

@mysdianait Yep, I remember you used to say "YOU type, YOU earn - I type, I earn" I believe it was... but things have changed since then huh?
I don't think I am brave enough to go off my meds, they do help and I need all the help I can get
In these times we have to be very cautious and need to worry.

@AngelisaQT That's good to know. Keep yourself busy. I was so down in the dumps when my precious kitty passed away last year. I drowned myself in a good book to help.

I do see a doctor for my mental health and I am on medications for my issues. However, the medications only work so much, you still have to work on things in your own head. I am focusing on forcing myself to do things I do not feel like doing, even if I only play a game for 5 minutes, at least I am trying and hopefully it will help.

I do find that Mylot is a pleasant thing to do, and interacting with others in a non threatening way is a good counter to depression,at least for me.

Pacing is fine..good in fact. I always pace when I am under stress or am planning something. Good of you to come here. Playing games does not always work for me. I try to a. recall something happy. Like some achievement, or compliment that made me happy - relive that moment. b. sing to block fears or sad/bad thoughts. c. Set targets for me to achieve, for example on myLot. d. Play with kids. I tease them rotten. e. Trouble my friends..tease them rotten.

@AngelisaQT I have been doing it a lot, so it does work for me. It is ok if it does not work for you. Warm bath? Does that work for you? Bathroom singing?

@vandana7 I think forcing myself to do things I know that I used to enjoy will help me. So far rejoining myLot has helped. I feel a lot better.

Thank you for the tips!
Pacing isn't so good when it is all you do though. It gets very tiring and old after days, even months of doing it all day.

Hi dear. I know how you must be feeling. I have experienced depression twice in my life so I know exactly what thoughts you must be having. I just want to say you try consulting a psychiatrist, please don't take this lightly. Many times it increases and the outcome isn't pleasant. I can just suggest you try to stay calm by doing prayers that helped me and another thing helped me stay strong amidst it is my hobby of reading. You can engage in whatever makes you feel happy. Try talking if you feel like with your loved one about anything if not necessarily what you feeling. I know it will be difficult as one doesn't feel like doing anything but by trying you can do it and then you will feel better. I hope and pray that you come out of it soon as this place isn't good to get settled. Take care. God bless
. Lastly nothing is more important than one's life.

Yes, thank you. Life is too short to be depressed all of the time! I am forcing myself to do things now, little by little, and it seems to be helping.
I do see a psychiatrist and am on medication. The medication only works so much, the rest is up to me in my head.

Welcome back. Keep calm and forget about depression. Nothing beats a problem when one has to struggle with what to eat everyday. I know a lot of people here in my place who has to struggle everyday yet they can still manage to smile and laugh and interact with others.

I know exactly how you feel as I live it every single day. Some days are worse than others but somehow I still manage to push through it. I honestly do not know how though. It seems I enjoy nothing at all anymore. I have struggled with depression for most of my life. There are many reasons for it though but it is worse these days than it ever was. Wish we could go back to when life was a little more enjoyable but I think we are at a point of no return now.
