What basic skill are you horrible at?

United States

Yesterday I read somewhere that hobbies are too much like a competition now. If you aren't "better than" or "as good as" someone else, then you aren't doing the hobby right. It had me thinking of this question. Is there a basic skill that you are horrible at? Or alternatively, Is there a hobby you gave up because it didn't come out the way you expected / hoped? For me, My basic skill is math. I am absolutely and horrendously bad at it. I love the invention of calculators AND the ability to just ask google what the sum of something is. As for my hobby.. the wood project I am working on has not come out exactly like I had hoped. I am not giving up because I know what I can / should do to fix it. So.. What about you?

*sigh* Well, I don't usually admit this to anyone but... I'm not good at looking ugly. I was talking to someone over the phone earlier who asked me if I have any disabilities. I told her I'm too handsome for my own good, does that count? She waited a beat and then started laughing... She asked if that was one of the things I said when people were being difficult? She was interviewing me for a job in customer service. I think I scored an extra point.

Definitely scored an extra point there. Wait.. Customer service at your current job or elsewhere? I don't think I'd want to work the customer service desk at walmart.

@DaddyEvil Ah, I was trying to remember if you said you didn't work there anymore or not. Oh, hmm.. So it'd be like a call center agent job?

@ScribbledAdNauseum I don't work for Walmart anymore. This is a work from home job. I think this one was for Amazon.

Nor can I. I mean, I do.. I just don't do the whole song and dance. It's a knot, two loops and another knot, not the right knot either.

In school I had relatives help me with my math work because they enjoyed it much more.

@rakski I had to stay after school for tutoring several times because of how bad I was. The teachers took pity on me and let me pass their classes.

I am a teacher and I have horrible penmanship! I am glad for technology that lets me type instead of printing on the board!

My penmanship is always different. Sometimes I can make it nice and neat, but other times I just get tired of writing and it's messy. I had a teacher in.. 9th grade? I think it was. She started our first class with "I can't write very well - get over it!" She would put things up on the projector for us to copy down and usually ended up just passing the projector sheet around so we could better read it.

I always wanted to paint; so I got a set of oil paints, canvases, etc.; but I have no artistic talent whatsoever. It was so disappointing.

Oh gosh! I want to paint too. Dollar Tree sells these little canvases and I've been considering getting one or two, but I don't think I'd be any good at it!

@LindaOHio I'd like to get a group of my friends together to try. I keep mentioning it, but our schedules conflict a lot.

Handwriting was always a sore spot for me. I broke my wrist when I was 5, a few months before I started school and couldn't use it for several weeks. I think that might have been part of it. I read one time that if you break your wrist even when it heals, it is never quite as mobile as it would have been.

That makes sense. The wrist is such a delicate bone.

That would be talking. Sometimes I talk too fast to the point people didn't understand me. It's hard as my job requires me to do presentation from time to time. I have to remind myself to slow down each time.

I used to be a very fast talker too. Mostly when I was a preteen and teenager. As I got into adult hood, I tend to talk slower or not at all.

I hate math, and was never good at it . . . but the weird thing is since I've been trying to teach the kids when they got stuck on their homework, suddenly I became a math wiz . Actually I stink at laundry. I mean, I know how to throw clothes in the wash or hand wash, but I feel like I'm winging it when it comes to taking care of clothes .

@ScribbledAdNauseum I would cringe if I got a survey with math. Were they talking about Common Core math - which is absolutely a horrendous way of doing math? Now that is confusing for the parents that learned it the "old way" . . . and it's confusing for the kids too . Borax . I need to learn how to get those whites super white without bleach!

I did a survey recently asking me about math problems. I really think they were trying to determine whether the average person understood the new way math is done in America. i was so confused and got all four of the items wrong. Yeah, I do't really do a lot of separating of colors etc that's supposed to be done. I sometimes throw borax in with the linens and that makes me feel like I know what I'm doing.

Just take it one step at a time. Crocheting in the round is always scary / difficult the first time. Crocheting your first granny square is too. I think you should start with something like wash cloths though. It'll get you used to working back and forth. That's what i did, but with a blanket and using my fingers. I still have the blanket but I don't use it.

Half of my peeled potatoes are... halfway gone. Yeah, I'm bad at it too. I haven't peeled a hard boiled egg in awhile, but I remember I just lightly tapped the shell over and over again until I could then just rinse it off.

I love to crochet but never could catch on to knitting. My mother in law was an excellent knitter but I couldn't grasp the whole two needle thing. I'm also happy that the calculator was invented and it's been a blessing for years when I balance my check book

I tried loom knitting and I kept dropping stitches or my tension was horrible! I look at the knitting needles sometimes when I'm at a store, but I don't think I could do it either! I would like to one day get the Addi Express though.

I am bad too! I tried to draw some coloring pages for my niece once and they were horrible! In the past I would go to youtube to learn how to draw some things like cartoon characters.
