The Ways To Balance Your Checkbook

I am balancing my checkbook right now by looking at my bank account online. I get a paper statement each month too but I hate waiting for it to come. Sometimes they have missed sending me one also or it gets lost in the mail so I started looking at my bank account online and just using a highlighter to mark off what has cleared. How do you prefer to balance your checkbook?

I have a simple system: keep the balance even. For example, if I have $806.22 left over I transfer the $6.22 to savings to make the checking an even $800.00. Helps me save money, too.

That's a great idea. I just put money into my savings the other day. I try to at least do that monthly. I like to check off what actually clears though because I have a check out there in limbo right now that someone has not cashed. I like to make sure of my transactions and make sure something was paid on time.

I wait for the statements. I always have the auto deposits to add in; so we always have more in the checking account than we thought!

I used to wait for mine too until they either skipped me or it got lost in the mail so I do it online to make sure of it now. Awesome on the auto deposits!!!

@RebeccasFarm Is there a way you keep track of what your balance is though or do you just not use a checkbook?

My process is way too complicated to describe. And probably way too complicated anyway than it has to be. But I compartmentalize my checking account. I do have a process for reconciliation, which I do perform once a quarter, but there are a number of things I have to reference to do it right.

Oh, I see. We rarely use cash here since we have debit cards, checks and credit cards or virtual payments like Paypal.

I do use online banking quite a lot but I still like to have paper statements that I can actually look through and compare in the flesh, as it were.

I like to have the paper statements too but just cannot count on them where we live. The post office is all messed up.
