Visit with my cousins

My husband and I visited my cousin in Richmond, VA today at her nursing home. She has Alzheimers and although she knew me when we saw her before the pandemic, she didn't know me today. She still knows her siblings (her two younger sisters were there today) and she knew my husband and I are some of her family. But we had a good time talking about childhood memories. Bless her heart, she's obsessed with water and the ocean, but she still has her sense of humor. We're only three weeks apart in age...our mothers were sisters...but we had so much fun when we were young and got to spend time together. I was always in awe of Mary Lynn. She was so pretty and out going, I always liked whatever she liked. One time I wanted to have a red MG sports car when I grew up because that's what she wanted. At the time I had never even seen one! I cried a little when we left because although we may get to see her again (she's almost 200 miles from here), but I know most likely she won't ever recognize me again. And it breaks my heart.

This disease is so horrible, it stills memories. I can understand that you were sad leaving. May be she will recognize you again the next time.

@1creekgirl It happens, sometimes they cannot remember people or events and other moments their mind clears up. I hope she will recognize you. I forgot to say, you are the prettiest.

I guess there's always that slight hope that her mind would clear for a moment and she would know me.

That's wonderful that you got to spend time with your cousin. I'm sorry that she didn't recognize you. Alzheimers is such a tragic disease, I hope someday they can find a cure. But at least you got to reminisce about your childhood memories. I know when I get together with my cousins we do the same thing, and have a great time laughing and carrying on about everything.

@moffittjc It always seems to revolve around money. Why does greed so often harm relationships?

@1creekgirl And that's what being with family should always be about...laughing and having a good time together.

It is a heartbreaking situation but I am glad you got to see her and got to spend some time with her now, Now if you did have that red MG sports car you could just whizz over to see her

I'd sure love to have one! Although, I think I'd rather have a baby blue Porsche.

Every time I was about go visiting some older relatives, I would see a new notice/warning about Covid-19 & family gatherings. I am worried that if I don't visit them, they may go suddenly.

You are right this disease is horrible. I think most think that way but don't really realize how deep it is until you live through it. My mother has ALZ and so far she still remembers me but we get some weird stories when we ask her what has she been doing. At least her mind is still imaginative. Big hug to you!

@1creekgirl That is heartbreaking! The last time we visited her other than the other day was two weeks ago. One of my daughters went with me and she told her while I was trying to find all of her clothes...that her papa dropped her off there and just left her. He left her! It's so sad how they interpret things in their head and think they are real. It is a horrible disease. Have you done anything about being tested to see if you have the gene passed along? I am seriously thinking about it.

@kareng No, I haven't. I've always been so forgetful that I tell my kids if I get it, you won't know it right away, lol.

My mother and five of her siblings have/had Alzheimers except for Mary Lynn's mother. But then her daughter got it. Strange how it can skip a generation.

Thank you so much. She was the "cool" cousin. She'd be horrified if she knew how she looks now.

Alzheimer's, to me, is a very tough disease to deal with. My uncle suffered it and dementia, but interestingly enough he always knew who I was, although I think he saw me as a kid. But he still knew who I was. Glad you had a great time and got to see her.

Thanks, it truly is a heartbreaking disease. When Glen Campbell found out he had Alzheimers, he wrote the saddest song I've ever heard called "I'm Not Gonna Miss You." And it's true. The patient doesn't miss anyone because they eventually don't even know us. It's the loved ones who miss them.
