Upgrading the Canal

The trust that looks after the canals, in the UK, started work in 2019 to improve the towpaths. Mostly the paths looked like the left hand picture with protruding branches and once it started raining would rapidly become ankle in deep mud. On a bike it is quite the bone shaking ride and you are forever worried about punctures. On the right is the upgraded path, with overgrowth cut back and smooth, draining surface. These are a joy to pedal along, with room for both pedestrians and cyclists. Things ground to halt last year as the lock down tightened its grip, but work has resumed and I am hoping they will complete the planned improvements from where I live, in West Drayton, to Paddington, about 15 miles. That will mean I can cycle into London on a quiet and traffic free route enjoying the greenery alongside water – one of life’s great joys. I am planning to take an exploratory pedal and see how far the improvements to Paddington have gotten. One slight hitch , not long ago you were just about alone on the towpaths, now people have discovered the delights of a canal side walk the paths are a lot busier.

@CarolDM Well, you can't forget there is about six feet of water to one side of you! Not a time to be wobbly

That is certainly a big improvement. I can imagine it's a lovely ride alongside the canal. Pity that others have discovered it. lol

@Ronrybs That's the problem with a lot of tourist attractions. The more people, the less attractive to us I'm afraid.

@JudyEv True, it is a bit of balancing act between demand to use and the tranquility

That is a yes and no case. More people means more congestion, but the popularity means that it will be maintained... or so I hope!

I love what they have done, it is a great improvement. Shame that people will come more numerous to walk there.

@Ronrybs This happened in many places. In Italy, my native city (Milan) had many canals and goods were transported through those canals. Right now they are so neglected that the navigation is impossible.

I think it is a good thing, the canals have been neglected for a long time, so with people using it should ensure it is maintained.

@LadyDuck If it hadn't been for the boom in leisure boating, our canals would probably all be gone now. They were brought back to life by enthusiasts who volunteered to reopen them. Even today, more canals are being brought back into service. And a good thing too, I say!

They have made a massive upgrade to part of the towpath near us - it's like a narrow road, you could easily drive a car along it! Great for cyclists, wheelchair users, pushchairs etc - except for the absolutely humungous bridge over the railway to access it unless you go an extra 3 miles or so to get around it!

@Ronrybs Different people were responsible for each thing, and the bridge came several years before the path upgrade. If I'd known how awful it would be I would have made a fuss!

Fairly typical of the infrastructure, let down by badly designed fixes. Mind you I suppose they could have run out of money

Must be a lovely view to ride a bicycle along it. I think I watched a video of people like in narrowboat in the canal.

And by the way, did you know it is apparently illegal to take a horse on the towpath - even though that is the very reason they were created?

Ah I hope that they resume with making the towpaths nice... and that people clear out a bit some you can enjoy without a crowd

Some progress has been made, but I need to travel beyond Hayes. The canal branches there and see just how far along they gotten on each one
