Welcome Summer!

Although the weather here is still very far from being summery, today is technically the first day of summer (in the Northern Hemisphere), since it is half way between the Spring Equinox and Midsummer's Day. Never mind celebrating a rather short-lived victory by the Mexican army over the French, we are half way from equal nights and days to the longest day and the shortest night when fairies are reputed to roam abroad (if Shakespeare is to be believed, that is).

Oh I'm glad you told us that! Many people describe June 21st as the start of summer, which, since it is also midsummer's day, presumably means that summer only lasts 2 days.

I agree that most people say that summer begins on 21st June (or whatever day the solstice falls) but then they illogically call it MID- summer's Day.

@owlwings My kids' last day of school before summer vacation was always around the first day of summer. That is how I remember it.

@akalinus I always used to think (when I was at school) that summer began around the middle of the summer term (is that 'semester' in the States?) and definitely ended with the start of the Autumn term!

I thought that was in June? Well here it might as well be summer . . . it is supposed to get to 91F or so today (may have been a tad warmer yesterday). And even that is not the hottest it could get here. If anything it is half way through the day now - and yes, tonight we have tacos .

@owlwings Now I am very confused . I just read that it is the ancient "middle" of summer, but astronomical beginning of summer. I shall ask the fairies of their opinions .

Hmmm, it did get into the the mid 80s here but I don't think of that as summer but tomorrow and the next day should be in the low 90s, now that's summer weather

It's currently about 24C and likely to stay around there (as the max) at least until Monday, when we are moving house. That's pleasant - not too warm. The worst is when it's in the 30's and humid. You don't know where to put yourself (except in the pool or the sea or the shower). By the sea, it's better: there's usually a breeze and it's not difficult to find a shady spot somewhere. Inland, where we don't often have pools and no aircon, you just wait for the evenings!

@RebeccasFarm We're only moving about 10 miles to a village where both my daughters now live and 20 minutes from my son. We have plenty of hands for the move but it's proving a little tricky organising a removal company at the moment! My outside thermometer just hit 30C but that's because the sun's on it!

@owlwings Oh you are moving then? Please take care then and I pray you have some helpers..this is not easy by any stretch. Are you moving far? It is far beyond 30C here now already

Will I meet Dairy Titania on midsummer during my dreams? Far to look like summer today.

You could do, who knows? I feel sure that a meeting with Titania might not be a wholly pleasant experience! She might turn you into a duck for a while!

@owlwings If she turns into a duck I am fine, I have always loved ducks, since I was a very little girl.

We're having a hard enough time convincing Spring to stay around, nevermind coaxing Summer to show up.

How I wish we have summer now. I feel that our Autumn is back again as what I feel outside.
