The Hills of Home

May 6, 2021 11:28am CST
Except for a couple of years in my early teens, I’ve spent all of my days in the hills of Kentucky. My daddy couldn’t make enough money here so he moved us to northern Indiana, got a factory job and we lived ‘high on the hog,’ buying new furniture, a better car and all the little extras that we’d never known before. About once a month, mommy would pack us all up and daddy would drive the eight hours of interstate to visit family and friends back home. As time went on, it got harder and harder to leave behind the loved ones and the mountains to head back up north. Our family made some good friends and have many happy memories of the little town of Pierceton where we were warmly welcomed. My younger brother might not be alive today but for the doctor who diagnosed a cyst that had grown as his skull was coming together as an embryo. It was both inside and outside his skull, requiring major surgery. Not long before he passed away a few years ago, daddy asked me if I thought maybe God sent us there so David would get the medical care we didn’t even know he needed. I think it’s very likely He did. About this time of year in the spring of 1967, the redbud trees were in full bloom when we started up Slade mountain, headed to mamaw’s and papaw’s for the week-end. By the time Sunday rolled around, my parents had decided to move back home. Daddy found a job as a mechanic at a car dealership, loaded up everything we owned on a borrowed pick-up truck and never looked back! I went down the mountain last evening to get pizza for the kids. As I rounded the last curve, the view you see in my photo greeted me. I was reminded of how fortunate I am to call this place home.

@HomewardBound It's wonderful to meet another believer on myLot! My husband's niece Donna was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer last week, but it was discovered (hopefully early) when she went for a colonoscopy. Please say a prayer for her. She loves Jesus and she's a very special woman. Thank you so much.

Oh my goodness, Marlins, you have made my day! Elvis has been my all time favorite artist since I was twelve years old. It felt good to go back in time (over 50 years) and sing along with Elvis. I still remembered every word of Kentucky Rain.

@marlina I suspect it was probably my singing along that made my parents cringe!

It amazes me, looking back on my life, how many times the Lord had my back, protecting me from my own lack of judgement, immaturity and sometimes downright stupidity.

What a beautiful picture you took. That is great you are back home again. I have no place to go back home to. But my mother's family is from Oregon and my husband's family is from Oregon. So we retired and moved to Oregon. It is really nice here.

I’ve always heard Oregon is a beautiful place. I know my parents were glad to be back home, even though we struggled financially for several years.

Your really blessed Ma'am. Having a great family is indeed you can call a home. Home which became our foundations of our values and principles in life. A home which molded us to become a better peron and the best version of our self. And having a home with such a lovely neighbors and a place like that, you can really say the saying "there's no place like home."

I grew up in Mt. Sterling, KY. I've been in Florida since 1991. Can't say I miss the snow, but I really DO miss KY in the fall. Used to go to Slade, KY in the Red River Gorge to hike and see the trees dressed in their fall colors. Wouldn't be able to hike anymore, but would love to sit on Natural Bridge and look out at all the splendor of Fall.
