Memories worth Dying for or Living for

As I reflect on my long life, some of my experiences replay. I do not dwell on the hurts but keep them on sleep mode. But I like to relive moments that act as a balm in troubling times like now when our lifestyle has taken a turn for the worse. We are in uncharted territory. Of course, in good times we have luxury to indulge in pointing fingers but now we are reminded that for survival we need to unite. Okay, those that replay in my mind are what touched my heart, acts of total selflessness, going way beyond the call of duty. I cannot forget a few where circumstances played in my favor too. I have always put in my best effort without looking at the reward. At one place, I went all out to get records in order as an auditor and I was told that the door was open if I wanted an opening in that establishment. At another, I expressed a wish to work near my home but got a reply ”you are booked already, you are wanted at another place”. That was so soothing to hear for a young man! And I can never forget a bus driver refusing to take any money and gave me a free ride. I did try my best but he brushed me aside saying the bus was going from point A to B, and I had boarded it almost at the end of the journey. And another when I had finished my meal and wanted to settle my bill, I was told a casual acquaintance had paid for it. I was looking for an opportunity to repay his kindness but he passed away soon after. These are the memories that live with me and I do not want to reflect on those that were professionally challenging and rewarding in my long career. They did not touch my heart like the goodness of humanity that keeps our lives worth the while. Love and compassion never die despite acts of injustice that stare at us from the news media every day. I am sure you have a few to share too. Image: Sweet Memories from free media site Pexels

That is nice to know. Let us cherish them. I tend to replay them, or rather they replay by themselves, to reassure life is always worth living.

Love, compassion, and kindness never fail to soothe our hearts. The reward is the feeling of doing what is right and thereby touching hearts.

There are so many kind people in this world. Instead of focusing on the bad, we all should find the good. It is out there for us to find. Sounds like you have done just that. What great memories you have. I also try to focus on the good. Not always easy but life is not easy at best. My favorite memories are, of course, hearing my son laugh and smile and joke around. Always happy and to his friends, he was called their big brother. Always giving to others, never taking anything for himself.

I can understand your depth of feeling for your son who is no more. My only son was born after fourteen years of our marriage. I recollect every day of his life when he was with us till he left for another country before he was seventeen. Happy that he is independent but still as a parent we miss him although in touch over video calls. My parents are no more but I can feel their presence all the time like those of a few others who were very close to me but no more now. May you find peace of mind with the thought your son is still living in you. He is always with you still.

I know you living a great life ever since. We do make memories every each day. But for me I think what we must treasure are the ones that really put a smile on our face and that really makes us joyful. For the bad memories, just think of the lessons we learned from that.

Those that put a smile on others' faces and also ours give us fulfillment and bliss. I am eager to forgive the hurts and try to forget them too. They are just a burden on our journey

Thanks, Ocean Tiara, why should I punish myself remembering some who were up to no good? None can escape the consequences of their actions.

I have lived a long life as well. I remember a young many in Vancouver who was hungry and asking for help. I took him into a coffee shop and got him a drink and food and told him when he gets back on his feet to help someone else. I never forgot him, I always hope he ended up doing better.

A good act starts the ball rolling in the right direction. When we do what is right for others, it will create a ripple effect and the beneficiaries will also pay it forward by helping others.

Some people leave a lasting, positive, impression however brief our interaction with them may be. I cherish them and recall the moments often.

Bus stories must be fairly common. My wife and I got on a bus one day, going to the station. We had thought that we could buy our ticket on the bus, for the bus, and for the train too, still to come, as the bus was supposed to connect to the train, being the Politician's compromise solution for the proposed train line extension, which never went ahead. It was aptly named the train-link bus. The bus driver told us that he didn't sell any tickets at all. You were supposed to buy them (presumably in advance) at the station, and they would then cover you for the bus journey as well. I said, "Well, we will be buying our train ticket, which will then back-cover this bus ride too, once we get to the station." "That's good enough for me," he said, and he let us ride on the bus, without a ticket, to the station. A mean stickler type of a bus driver, would not have let us ride on his bus, without tickets.

@Shiva49 l think this is decided at a higher level than just our soul working for us here. God's hand is behind these occurrences too. The enemy is not life, or our self, or anything else, but when a seeming enemy does appear, do not see disconnection, but see that the connection behind all is still there, connecting all to all, regardless. God sits behind all.

@Shiva49 Yes, the Devil's advocate must be serving a purpose, or else, he would have lost his job years ago.

@innertalks We need them all to be alive. Otherwise, life will become too mundane and predictable.
