This is a quilt with a story. A local man embroiders for his mental health. It began when he was little more than a teenager and was involved in a serious automobile accident. Six years ago he and his mother decided to turn one of the many sets of embroidered blocks into a quilt. The fabric was purchased, a rough plan drawn on a slip of paper and the cutting out began. A week after this tentative start the mans mother suddenly, unexpectedly passed away. The quilt blocks and pile of fabric sat in a closet, taking up space. Earlier this spring the man stopped at the local fabric shop and asked....would someone be willing to make this quilt? As thanks they could have all of the other embroidered squares (enough for 5 more quilts). The owner of the quilt/fabric shop thought of me and asked my thoughts. Now a few months later, I adjusted the original plan enough to make it “mine” and this is the result.

It looks really good and an interesting back story too. I've never made a quilt but have been interested in them since I was a kid. Apparently originally they were made from off cuts of fabric used for other things...or that's what I was told I'd one day like to buy one.

Indeed, patchwork was originally a way to make things from all the odd bits left over from making clothes and such. Nowadays people usually seem to buy brand new fabric, which seems to defeat the object really, but the results are certainly attractive!

Oh wow! So did he and his mother embroider the butterflies and flowers? That's so pretty. I hope he likes it. What will you do with the other embroidered squares and what are they like?

He embroidered the blocks. You will hopefully see a couple more quilts I've made with his blocks. Two will be quilted on Monday. This one us under construction.

I do not know very many people still making quilts. I am glad to hear somebody is still doing this.
